Perhaps if Boris (and the country) didn’t get detailed by covid, it might have happened..

If it does happen it would be a welcome positive for the motorist though, a rare event these days!!!

perhaps the thinking was if the limit was raised to 80 people some would be doing 90. Has it is a fair few are exceeding the 70 from my observation. I think emissions and fuel consumption play a factor as well

Can't see it getting much traction now. Only an ostrich would deny that driving 10mph faster would use more fuel. In Wales, of course, they are more likely to lower the limit to 60.

Was it not a tory manifesto pledge? Probably went the way of most of their ideas, in the bin.

It's been bounced around for years, I don't think it was ever in a manifesto. I think Blair first mentioned it but at 80mph it would be strictly enforced so it wouldn't actually lead to higher speeds since many are already getting near to 80mph given the margin. Is it still 10% + 3?

Not here in the frozen North West. HS2 from Birmingham to Crewe delayed and all talk of a North West link between Liverpool and Leeds gone.

Maybe these grandiose projects should be started in the North then at least we would get some benefit when they are stopped.

This will cross quite near my town, and from what I hear via the local / regional newspapers, those directly affected (of all political hues) aren't happy and are opposing it or at least wanting it moved 'from their back yard' (presumably not caring it affects someone else's).

People who support it normally live far enough away to not be affected, but like the added convenience of such new rail links.

The link was apparently originally supposed to link Oxford and Cambridge.

What happened to 80 MPH limit? - Bromptonaut

The link was apparently originally supposed to link Oxford and Cambridge.

It actually reinstates a route that was closed east of Bedford, presumably following Beeching. The section from Bletchley to Bedford somehow staggered on on borrowed time until a relatively recent upgrade and a little longer ago being extended to Bedford Midland having previously terminated at St Johns.

Oxford to Bletchley as far as Bicester was restored to passenger use in (I think) the eighties. Bicester to Bletchley was almost abandoned in spite of the massively expensive flyover junction installed during electrification in the sixties. That's now being re laid with new track (and a new flyover!!) although I've lost any sense of when it's due to open,

What happened to 80 MPH limit? - RickyBoy

That's correct. Oxford to Bicester to Winslow to Bletchley began in 2020 and is due for completion in 2024. New station at Winslow and new platforms (West-East) at Bletchley are almost complete.

It then picks-up the existing (old) Marston Vale line from Bletchley to Bedford. Herein lies the difficulty. From Bletchley there are approx 8/9 level-crossings adjacent to the existing stations. Last week there was an article about such a road crossing in Bicester where it was estimated that the road would need to be closed for 50-mins every hour to traffic when the trains were running at peak periods.

I live in MK, cycle extensively and consequently use a number of the B & C-roads adjacent to these stations that cross the tracks. It's bad enough now (the wait at the barriers) with 2/3 trains an hour as they tend to put the gates down 5-mins before the passenger train passes, plus there's occasional goods traffic, etc.

However, no trains have been running on the Marston Vale Line since December 2022 and won't again until Autumn 2023 as the maintenance company responsible for upkeep of the fleet went bust back then!!! Replacement buses pick-up the slack...

...so, its been good news for cyclists and drivers of late but perhaps indicative of likely scenario's if/when the West to East line ever gets fully up & running?

Let's face it – the UK can rarely build/keep any infrastructure project to cost, completion date and quality control...

To be fair HS2 just about still exists.

More like HS1.5 as the Eastern route to Leeds has been cancelled and the Western route to the North West has been put on hold for 2 years so it'll just be HS to Birmingham.

The proposal to increase the motorway limit to 80 mph was/is a political fudge as it would be accompanied by strict enforcement so the effect limit wouldn't change much, from 78 under ACPO guidelines to 80.

10% +2 mph and you're done.

Whilst many will say they have been done for going just a few mph over the limit, NO ONE has ever been able to prove, with paperwork, evidence to show this.

So on the Motorway at 78mph you won't get a ticket. At 79, you will.

This information comes from Pistonheads, a huge Car Forum, with specialist Motoring Lawers to back this up.

Same with Average speed sections, set your cruise control to 55mph in a 50, nothing will come in the post.

The authorities would not be able to cope, catching and dealing with everybody who went over by1 or 2 mph.

I see no case for increasing the limits for any vehicles, however they're powered. Given the traffic levels and what seems to me increasingly poor driving skills, there's a case for lowering it. My compromise would therefore be to leave things as they are. If it's not broken then why fix it? I suspect it was all Politics behind this, something else quite quickly became higher priority.

Majority of EU countries have 130 km/h or 80 MPH.

Range of an ICE also decreases the faster you go.

What you can’t see is how many EV’s have been charged via a roof full of photovoltaic panels, or from one of increasing number of public charging networks supplying only electricity from renewable sources.
What we can see, for certain, is that every petrol or diesel (barring the occasional McDonald’s truck running on recycled cooking oil) is running on the carbon from long dead lifeforms and pumping it into the atmosphere.
What happened to 80 MPH limit? - Sofa Spud

70 mph is plenty fast enough on our overcrowded motorways and dual carriageways. OK, so on a clear stretch of motorway in good weather conditions it would be perfectly safe to do 80 mph, but not much of our motorway and trunk road network has those conditions at any given moment during the day.

The grid is mix of all sorts of generated electric so you cannot be sure that what you are charging with. Would you spit it back out if it was from gas? The Ice driver seems an easy target in the grand scheme of reducing carbon as mentioned before about rich peoples toys yachts private planes extravagant houses etc few are concerned about a bit of carbon. Nothing is free going faster in your EV is consuming more electric at some extra cost to the owners pocket

I could deduce a lot of things but I have noticed EV drivers are as bad for speeding where they can as the old performance car drivers used to be.

I suspect as they get more powerful and drivers realise the power, they will use it where possible, and if they can afford one- range- will not bother them as they enjoy the power of an EV

Time to raise the speed limit for HGVs as well, often much higher in the US.
What happened to 80 MPH limit? - gordonbennet
The alleged target is using less resources, going faster always uses more power because wind and tyre friction drag increases, that's the reason given for temp and perm speed reductions cropping at various points where motorways pass urban areas, they can't increase speed limits in one breath and talk about the climate scam in the next, even their most blinkered admirers would be embarrassed by the hypocrisy.

We definately don't want HGV limits raising, despite all travelling in the same direction and with minial speed differtials on motorways HGv are still crashing into each other and turning the whole lot over on straight roads, again trucks have the aerodynamics of a brick so shifting masses more air at 60+ than 55, many operators have limited their vehicles below 55 for fuel saving.
The raising to 50 on single cariageways was a success, it has stopped many of the suicidal overtakes by frustrated car/van drivers who might have been stuck behind a supermarket lorry with cruise set at 37 mph for dozens of miles.

Regarding promises of jam tomorrow by publicity seeking politicians, it's what they do, how long have the fake conservatives been promising mass immigration would be cut to the tens of thousands (call me Dave, son of Blair), just one example of legion of falsehoods, they all lie, its what they do.

Dead easy to police - motorway speeding tickets are issued via ANPR (either via automatic cameras or officers on an over bridge), the same ANPR process will immediately also be able to identify the stated emissions of the vehicle. Various low emission zones already do the same thing.

If I charge at home via Octopus, it’s coming via 100% renewable resources. They also supply public charging networks.
Gridserve, IONITY, Instavolt, Tesla and others all supply 100% electricity from wind, solar, tidal, etc.

I am an Octopus Energy domestic customer foisted on me when Avro went bust. All I am interested in is what I am paying the sharks. They all all the same jut dressed up to look different. I have read their blurbs and took the time to read your link just to refresh what they continually tell me. Their latest email to me is now telling me that my meters are old in an effort to take up smart meters which are riddled with all sort of problems from not recording correctly to not recording at all or just not sending any info.

From their link they sound like gods gift to the planet and can do no wrong. I gave up the link when I got almost to the end when I came across Heat Pumps Now it is widely known that these do not work unless you have a super insulated property. You also need radiators bigger than the walls to hang them on and a hot water cylinder which once empty will take forever to heat up again. British Gas are pushing the same scenario but cannot give them away. The fan to work the condenser is run by electric and over time can get extremely noisy and service costs are high let alone the purchase cost and installation. People have been ripping the things out of their homes because they are just inefficient.. I just hope we do not have another winter like 1947 62 or 82 and that is down south. The climate up north is no comparison.

By all accounts the domestic tariffs from Octopus should be beating the rest of the trade hands down and pigs might fly.

Well just what is the green band about, I am not bothered by it, just curious. If I did buy an EV and I have not discounted the possibility if my driving needs change it would not have the band, just a personal thing. So why are these EV plates optional They are not read by ANPR Is it illegal to put them on an ICE? Yes why would you before anyone asks. What is the point of them?

What happened to 80 MPH limit? - mcb100
They aren’t mandatory, and can, in theory, only be fitted to zero emission in use vehicles. So not to hybrids.
As far as I’m aware, there’s no legislation around them so I’m not sure what would happen if one were to fit them to a V8 Range Rover.
I’m guessing that, ultimately, it’ll enable easier identification for low emissions areas and maybe cheaper parking for EV’s.
I was driving an EV yesterday that had them, but I’m ambivalent about their presence.

Seeing as we're going off piste...

Heat pumps are certainly not perfect, but a house with a heat pump and 2kw of PV will have about the same energy costs as a house with a gas boiler.

The temperature output from a heat pump is lower than a boiler. That would indeed mean that larger radiators are required. As it is, the radiators in a lot of older homes are oversized anyway (because they were sized based on single glazed windows and very little loft insulation), so an upgrade isn't always necessary. On new builds, there is the option for underfloor heating or radiators with more panels, but the insulation in new builds now means that they barely need heating anyway.

Heat pumps are being pushed because it is possible to run them at zero carbon if you have a lot of PV, especially with storage. Even if you don't, the de-carbonisation of the grid means that electricity produces less carbon than gas. There is a separate question of whether it's necessary to reduce carbon in the first place, but that's a further tangent that we should probably avoid.

It is not true that heat pumps require more insulation. The effect of heating the air through radiators is constant regardless of the heat source. The oversizing of radiators is what is required to get the heat into the air in sufficient quantities.

Finally, they put out the idea of an 80mph speed limit and it didn't make much of a splash. Apathy= not vote winning so they didn't bother.

You have to be optimistic when they cannot give the systems away.. For me the killer phrase is "" they do not work well below 8degrees C"" which is when you need a heating system.. The CMA report trumps the Guardian with what I think is a hard dose of reality Out of the survey in the Guardian 80% happy out of 2500 which means 500 not, a rather big number. Three weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting Liverpool, M2, M25, M1, M6 etc. In all I drove close to 1,000 miles including a few trips around. I would love to see a speed limit of 80mph, but all these "smart" (dumb) motorways with display boards reducing the speed limit every time a twig falls onto the carriageway ... just thinking about 80mph is like having retrospective thoughts about the good old days. I wish.

But, having a minimum speed limit (a realistic one to keep the differences in speeds to a minimum) would be a good idea. My favour would be 55 or 60 mph but taking advice from the RHA would be sensible. I once drove using the emergency spare on the car, I quickly came to realise that 50mph was too slow, my slow speed forced HGV's to move to lane 2, thus creating a queue of traffic to bottleneck behind. Far from ideal for safe motoring.

I once had a bubble car with a 200cc engine. Took it on a motorway, briefly. It would 'top out' below 60MPH and the 'wash' from HGVs meant I couldn't keep it in one lane.
