Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Random

Another random post.

Generally I use the house vacuum cleaner, it's such a palaver. Now looking to get a cordless one for the car. What do people use/recommend?

I use household 220 V vacuum cleaner. I found handheld vacs lacking suction.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Adampr

I use an Einhell one that uses the same batteries as my drill, impact driver etc.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - corax

I've got a corded Henry HVR160. It's perfect for the job, powerful, quiet. The bag takes a huge amount of dirt before needing replacing. The flexible tube and tools get everywhere in the car without any faff.

Never used a cordless. They're probably more powerful than they used to be, but the batteries will eventually wear out.

Current car I took the carpets out (dunno what happened to them) and then removed the drain plugs, so I can sweep fine debris through the hole with a little brush

After a rat colonization I replaced the drain plugs with flattened beer can disks wired in place, which they don’t seem motivated to gnaw through, though I’m sure they could.

On the whole carpets are an insanitary b***** nuisance and can hide serious corrosion.

I think I would do the same again

I'd add another vote for a Henry.

I bought one about 15 years ago to clean the car/garage and generally be abused when cleaning up paint and brick dust after DIY jobs etc.

Completely indestructible and the same one is now also used in the house, as we realised it was better at cleaning carpets than the "Good" one we didn't want to ruin by using it for clearing up brick and plaster dust!

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Adampr

We have a Henry for the house. Much better than your Dysons etc. And proudly made in Somerset!

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Bromptonaut

One of the two household mains vacuums. One is a Bosch cylinder type the other a Dyson DC-03 approx 20 years old that I rescued from stuff my late Mother asserted was 'shot' and should be taken to the tip.

Both use a trunk device although the Dyson has been used on the Berlingo's large boot in carpet mode.

I use a cordless Dyson bought second hand for use on the car, sucks well but it could really do with a new battery now.

We bought an industrial type vacuum cleaner from screwfix, with all the tools when we bought our current house, used it for the cleaning then and now with bags in it, cleans floors and rugs (think dog hair) like a dream. Use it for the car too.

I use a cordless Dyson

So do I, great hoover no problem at all, does the job very quickly......

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - groaver

Vax Blade 4 with Lithium ion battery.

It has two power settings. The stronger setting is needed to get debris out of the carpet fibres.

It runs down in about 10 minutes on that setting.

Otherwise around 20 minutes constant use on regular.

Another Henry (well, actually, Harry) user here. Use it in the house and the car - nice long flex, plenty of suitable tools. For me there's no reason to buy another machine when this does the job so well.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Big John

Another vote for using a Henry from me - amazing suction and the bags last for ages without needing emptying. The filter size is effectively the full circumference of the device. Very long mains flex and hoses makes the job easier. I've had my Henry for decades.

In the past I've tried various battery handheld devices and suction has always been underwhelming and the job takes much much longer! In addition the battery seems to only last a couple of years before expiring. If you do really need a handheld one look at the power of the motor and voltage & capacity of the battery - higher better!) The Makita 18v handheld looks interesting but I haven't tried it myself - they come as bare (without charger / battery) so it might only be cost effective if you use other Makita battery tools. Aren't there any 12V ones?

I suppose such use might slightly shorten your car battery life, but you are unlikely to notice that, whereas replacing a Makita LI-ION is likely to hurt a bit.

I've considered getting a 12V impact driver but havn't so far absolutely needed one, though I came close when I was trying to take my alternator apart.

You can get them but they won't have much power.

I use a MAKITA DVC750LZ - I already had the batteries, so it is very portable.

I also use a makita inflator on the tyres.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Falkirk Bairn

I use the portable Dyson.

A son uses his late Grandma's mains power electric vacuum cleaner. He took it when her house was cleared - 20+ years old he says it is better that the Black & Decker, the Makita car vacuums he had used in the past.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - UCB
I use a Hetty (a pink Henry). It’s a good value British made unit. It replaced a Nilfisk cyclinder vacuum which lasted 20 years. Once bought a cheap Bush cleaner from Argos for use in garage/car which was useless.

Another Henry (well, actually, Harry) user here. Use it in the house and the car - nice long flex, plenty of suitable tools

We have a Charles, bought it when we were refurbishing the house. Brilliant and despite plenty of abuse it still works perfectly.

In the house we normally use our aging Miele Cat and Dog which is even more ancient than the Charles but still works a treat. Only issue with it is the cost of bags, really expensive compared to the much larger Charles ones.

When we buy another cleaner it will be one from the Henry/Charles range with a Cat and Dog type rotating head.

MIL had a Dyson, total load of (expensive) tat. Did not suck at all but made loads of noise.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Crickleymal

Henry user here. Plenty of suck and a super long cable. We only bought it recently and I'm a convert.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - John F

Dyson. Sucks OK if filter clean and on max and the easily blocked intake passage patent. Had to replace the flimsy unfit-for-purpose red plastic trigger - stupidly designed to fail after a short time (google 'dyson trigger repair' for loads of stuff on this - how to dismantle etc) - absurdly difficult to get at - calls himself an engineer? Pah!

another vote for the Henry. Simple, sturdy, and versatile.

Got two Henrys - one up, one down. Charles for shampooing the carpets. Handheld Dyson in the kitchen. Oldest Henry is 21, still works perfectly. With the other one, he's about five I think, you can tell a few things have been cheapened but still great. i like the Dyson for a quick clean but it does feel a bit flimsy.

I had a three-storey house for many years and I got annoyed with the Henry always being on the wrong floor. So a twin was bought in a sale one year. Charles was inherited and the Dyson I bought. Dyson great for a quick clean but I wouldn't use it for rough work.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - primus 1

I bought a corded nilfisk vac to replace my karcher when it decided to take up smoking, quite pleased with it but I also have a Dyson hand held for small jobs in the car and elsewhere, I can’t keep it in the garage in winter as the batteries don’t like the cold…

Another vote for good old Henry - use it for the car and any rough debris that needs picking up. In the house we have the new cordless Henry Quick stick vacuum. Compact and uses bags and has been very good. Sadly not made in Somerset like the bigger ones.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Lee Power

I cant get mains power near my vehicle so the household Henry is a non starter for me.

I did use an 18 volt Makita vacuum cleaner but found it a bit gutless for the task - I use Makita kit at work so already had the batteries etc.

I recently got the Worx 20 volt vacuum ( already had a Hydroshot ) & it seems to have more suction / cleaning power compared to the Makita.

Combination of a brush and vacuum cleaner is best. Brush won't suck debris out of some areas.

I tried the cordless 1.5Kg Dyson, which was bought for my mum, who needed something light. Did n't think it was great for the car. Disappointed by all the Dyson hype.

I bought Shark CH950UKT Pet Handheld Vacuum Cleaner, it was much better in the car. It is the most amazing cordless. I use it every day around the house for spot cleaning. I had to remove the rotary head (as it pointless). I love it so much, I kiss it goodnight.

The cordless is great in the car, but not as powerful as as corded vacuum cleaner.

I also bought a corded Shark upright, which I think it better then the corded Henry (sorry!). The dust cannister filled up so quickly. I guess, my Henry was leaving a lot behind. However, the Shark is heavy and annoying to use. Too many things to click and unclick. Not for the ladies.

James here, a Henry without the cord reel-in fitment.

Tough powerful simple, where i work Henry's get used and abused for general clean up duties, some of it really heavy going.

Mine is a pink Numatic Hetty, very good vacuums designed for long life with great spares back-up. The long cord and hose makes it easier (compared to a Miele corded vacuum) to reach the car from the house. Easy to repair and plenty of you tube videos detailing the work. When you see builders vacuuming work debris up with these corded Numatic cleaners you know they are a quality robust product. British made too!

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - Xileno

"When you see builders vacuuming work debris up with these...."

That's what attracted me to the brand 20+ years ago. If it's robust enough for builders then cleaning carpets will be walk in the park for it.

I was wrong about saying I had a Charles - it's a George. Not sure what the difference is, it's a wet 'n' dry machine.

Think George can shampoo the carpet whilst Charles is just a standard wet and dry.

Car vacuum cleaner - what do you use? - edlithgow

I bought one of the first wet N dry machines (can't remember the brand. VERY long time ago. Think it might have been called Aqua-Vac).

It was utter rubbish.

It had a truck-type and size air filter above the collection bin which, (unsurprisingly in retrospect), clogged.

IF you made the mistake of actually using it wet (as advertised) the clog set hard and your filter was no more. It also dropped off when bumped, shooting a mushroom cloud of recirculated debris into the air.

It was laughably useless and one of the stupidest purchases I've ever made. I modified it to accept standard bags and got some use out of it, but it was always a source of annoyance.

Dunno what happened to it.

Commercial cynicism is of course a given, but I don't really get the bizniz model. Its shortcomings must have been evident on testing, yet it was marketed anyway. Doesn't seem very sustainable.

Contemporary wet vacs must have improved a lot to have survived.

Quick poke under the potato peelings in the youtube rubbish bin of collective memory revealed this

I gather the brand has been revived and being used by Asda for their floor cleaning stuff,(cheap and nasty) I`m told, though no idea myself, Goblin I was told were the first vacuum cleaner to be used in Buckingham Palace but how true that is is another thing

the name has been through several other companies over time and still as bad as ever (so I`m told) I did have one in the 70s which was the worst cleaner I ever come across and didn`t last its warranty- it burnt out....

Not clear if you refer to Aquavac or Goblin above, but seems like the latter.

I have a vague memory of my grandparents having an indestructible Goblin, but that would have been a very old one, perhaps from the original company.

Seems quite common for a good brand to fall on hard times and get corrupted by new management, latterly sometimes involving Chinese ownership. Think Volvo.

Perhaps just as well SAAB wasn't "rescued"

Yes you're right. I've checked on mine and it has a separate tank where you put detergent. I've used it on the car seats and carpets years ago, I was surprised how filthy the water was. The car would have been one year old at the time.

Second car I bought (Triumph 1300 at BCA, Leeds) I took the carpets out and trampled them in the bath with washing powder. An unbelievable amount of filth came out and I was quite surprised to see they were red (matching the seats) not brown.

Like I said above, carpets are an insanitary b***** nuisance.
