This.....thing is up for auction at the moment. Sadly, I need three seats.
Mostly talking on the video, but they start it at about 9 minutes in. Beware, it sounds like a bag of bags of spanners in a washing machine on a trampoline.

Have you, or did you ever hear a Spitfire or a Lancaster bomber at close range on startup with 4 of those engines?
Awesome.
Being airside by cargo at T4 Heathrow as Concorde took off was something too. and the evening takeoffs were great too.

Never close up, thank goodness. I'm a sensitive little thing. Even flying by they make the most incredible amount of noise.
I went to university in Reading and you always knew when it was 7pm because of deafening roar of Concorde coming in to Heathrow.

A few years back there was a fly past of a Lancaster, Spitfire & a Hurricane as a mark of respect for the young pilots that lost their lives learning to fly in WW2 at what was a local aerodrome commandeered by the RAF.
The planes were some 1/2 to 2 miles mile away and the sound of the bomber & 2 fighters was literally earth shaking.
200 yards from my house is a cemetery with some 20+ war graves - all really well tended by the council. There is also a small war memorial to the many others - Canadians, Poles as well as UK - all were around 20 ears old.

The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (near Skegness) is restoring a Lancaster and after starting up all engines does taxi rides for visitors.
They hope to restore it to flying condition in due course, revenue from visitor entry tickets and rides contributes to costs of the project.
Well worth a visit, in my opinion (and not too far from the base of the Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby.

The Lincoln Lancaster is called 'just jane', bought by 2 brothers in honour of there other brother who lost his life during ww2, she's technically airworthy now, there's a video clip showing her doing a fast taxi run during which just for a brief second you can see daylight under the main wheels.

She's technically not allowed to do that - hopefully one day she will get a full licence to fly again.

I know a location that has a 'flying flea' that's not permitted to fly without modifications. I understand the last time it was out, it did a 'fast taxi'.

I had the good fortune to see two Lancasters doing a flypast together, the year the Canadian one came over for it's major overhaul - the sound of 8 Merlins was awesome, actually 5 Merlins and 3 Packards as the Canadian plane had one of its licence-built Merlins go unserviceable so the BBMF lent them one of our spare engines.
I was also able to try some photography at the end of Fairford's runway when Concorde was testing - coming overhead with 4 Olympus on full reheat really did move the earth - they subsequently put a parking restriction on that road.

I remember the days of going so somewhere near Fairford to watch the takeoffs and landings a few hours later. My dad had taken me to bristol to see the first flight.

And now said auction has finished, with the hammer falling at £72,500.

While I love some of the old aero engined race cars, I find The Beast, spectacularly ugly!. It looked a bit better with its original bodywork, but even then it was an ungainly looking thing.
I'd rather put the engine in an old truck chassis and build up something that looks more like "Brutus" (bmw_brutus_2.jpg) or a Simplex LaFrance roadster (15548835943_7f0d20a616_b.jpg)
