Hi all,

just after some advice on a cheap run-around I've spotted for sale.

2006 convertible Nissan Micra. Seller says the driver door opens and closes but it's hanging a little.

Has anyone any ideas on the worst case scenario? They're wanting £800 and it has a full MOT.

It's also 50 miles away from me so I can only really make the one journey.

Thank you for your help.

If the door doesn’t shut properly, it could mean there’s a problem with the door pillar distorted or out of alignment. Not something you want on any car , especially a convertible. This could cause the roof not to close correctly. These are not a particularly nice car anyway . Move on , plenty sensible cars around for that sort of budget.

If there are, they don't seem to be mentioned on here very often.

On a car that age, it could be a simple matter of wear in the door hinge which may not be adjustable. I've seen that corrected by opening the door far enough to get a jack and wooden block underneath and jacking it.

Also, bear in mind it could indicate a corrosion problem. Without a roof providing structural integrity, corrosion in the body could cause it to sag.

A son owned a Volvo 480 - known problem with the driver door dropping.

It was £300 to fix it 30 years ago - replacement /strengthening of panels.

Initially they tougt it was the door pins that were worn/bent.

2006 convertible Nissan Micra

The K12 Micra was a great car we had 2 between 2005 and 2015. Both 1200's and went really well as well as being totally reliable, only part replaced was a broken spring.

But the convertible Micra was never popular. You lost space, added weight and the complicated roof was a problem waiting to happen.

Get a 2006 Micra but make sure its in good sound condition and not a convertible.

Personally, I think the fad for folding metal (usually) hardtops produced some absolute stinkers in the automotive world. In the case of smaller cars like the Micra, the necessary hurdles jumped to make enough space to pack that roof away while folded invariably results in spectacularly poor proportions. It also invariably results in a chunk of extra weight over the hatchback version, something like 170kg in the Micra's case, which has a detrimental effect of both MPG and performance. It also usually results in rear seats which exist only for the purposes of extra in-car storage due to the absence of any rear legroom (unless being driven by someone very short). If that wasn't enough to dissuade you it is also worth bearing in mind the fiendish complexities of that folding hardtop, the reliability of which will invariably decrease as the car gets older (and cheaper). Finally, the conversion from a rigid cage like structure to being open on top also means that these cars have nowhere near the structural integrity of their hatchback siblings, especially when the roof is down. This can often mean lots of squeaks and creaks when the roof is in place, but with the roof down the extra flex can give the distinct impression of the car being in 2 halves with some rubber between!.

Its not all bad though(!), £800 really isn't very much money these days. So if if you are convinced that the sagging door is not a result of the whole structure sagging (just a weak hinge for example), the roof raises and lowers fine, you find the driving experience fine, you don't need rear seats, and the MOT history does not throw up any alarm bells, it might be worth a punt!.

Thank you (and everyone else) - It's not as easy as going to get another Micra!

I'm just looking for a second car. I live rural and need a car. If my main car is off the road, I need a back up.

That's why I'm looking at something around the £1000 mark with a long MOT.

There's a fair few around, but are often advertised without the issues.

I've just been almost ready to view and buy a C2 - but before I set off, the seller disclosed a wheel bearing issue.

I think he forgot to mention this in the ad (as did the guy selling the Mazda forgot to mention wishbones need replacing!).

If a wheel bearing needs replacing it's usually no big deal financially. If you are only prepared to pay about £1000 you have to be equally prepared to fix 'issues' - that's why the car is cheap !

It's when it's not mentioned on the advert...

There are several which list the issues that need fixing and mention this in the advert e.g. "reflected in price."

A 2006/07 Getz just went for £900 - near enough full MOT and owner was adamant there was no underlying issues. If it wasn't so granny looking and slightly closer to home, I would have had it.

The guy with the 58 plate Mazda 2 has said it needs a new wishbone. Says it's a £25 job, which is why he's prepared to sell it for £800 - It's advertised for £850 without issues mentioned. Then he also mentioend the remote needs a new battery...

I think if you expect sellers of £1000 cars to specify every fault in their adverts you are somewhere near cloud-cuckoo land. At that price you have to ask searching questions and hope for honest answers. Your only valid objection might be if the ad said 'free of faults'.

The (well-)used car trade can be a bit short of honesty, as I'm sure you know, and £1000 cars without faults are pretty rare. A clean MoT pass is the best you can expect.

Not too far from Cloud-Cuckoo land!

I've just returned home with an 07 Corsa,12 month MOT, 100k on the clock - MOT 3rd March - practically 12 months, £950.

Only advisories were a tire close to the limit and slight play on an anti-roll bar.

I had to travel 80 miles but it made the journey back without issue.

The RCL remote does need a battery though...

It shows, you can get some value - I'm up north, not sure what it's like in other parts of the country.

Good for you. I hope it lasts while you get to know your new toy's quirks.
