Toyota Auris - Removing pressure nozzle from tire valves queston - NewCarOwner

Hi,

New car owner/driver here.

I have a question. When my tire pressure is low and I fill up everything goes smoothly but, even though I don't force the pressure nozzle against the tire, when I release the nozzle from the valve, it takes a lot of welly and wriggling to get it off. So much so, I hear a hiss (or air leak). From some research I am told that this is from the hose and not the tire as the valve has a mechanism to prevent pressure leaking out again (just like it doesn't when the cap is off I guess?).

Is there a special knack to how the nozzle should come off? IT houldn't require so much effort surely?

Thanks!

If the nozzle has a lever on it are you moving it to the release position? If so it should come off easily.
Tyre valves are very simple. They have a pin that is depressed by the pump nozzle to allows air to be pumped in. As the nozzle is removed the pin is released, sealing the valve. The hissing you hear is air released if the pin is still being momentarily depressed by the nozzle. Unless this is prolonged it’s not a significant amount of air being lost.

Thanks for the quick reply and no, I don't see any lever? For example, I fill up at Shell and there is a rubber hose and a metal head at thend that clamps onto the valve.

I use local supermarket petrol stations for tyre pressure checks etc and have had no problems. You just push the nozzle onto the valve, wait for the bleep and lift off. Any hiss is just a miniscule amount of air unless it's hissing all the time you wrestle with it.

When you say lift off do you mean pull off? As, in my (limited) experience, it takes a little bit of fiddling to get it off.

I rarely get air at a filling station, but when I do, it's just a matter of holding (pressing) the nozzle against the valve and letting go at the correct moment. No 'mechanism' which actually secures the hose to the valve.

Literally lift off. So long as you apply the pump nozzle in alignment with the valve it's easy.

The lever is usually (only?) found on home use pumps. As far as I know all petrol station ones are push fit. These can take a small bit of effort to pull off. It shouldn’t be a problem if you pull it straight.
