Has anyone come across John Cadogan the Australian Motoring Guru.

He doesn’t hold any punches regarding VAG Australia !

Yes, I'm a regular viewer on his YouTube channel. Indeed he does not mince his words. he has just as much ire for Mercedes, which he has termed the 'three-prong-ed suppository' or, worse still, the 'three-prong-ed swastika' though he hasn't used that one for a while now, possibly under threat of legal action.

He has a LOT to say about dieselgate (hence his ire at VAG), poor engineering quality and 'science' behind changes in the motoring industry and on customer service, as well as about the people in office.

He also doesn't have much time for Elon Musk, a aka (his words) 'Electric Jesus' and his 'claims' of varying sorts.

On the other hand, he generally thinks quite highly of Hyundai / KIA, used to to a reasonable degree of Mazda (until they got caught by the Australian authorities being very 'naughty' on the customer service side) but not Toyota or Honda in more recent years.

Very much a 'practical' (he has a 'man cave' with loads of tools) an realistic bloke, being a journo for a number of years and also is a degree-qualified engineer who appears to know his stuff.

I also rate John Cadogan as both knowledgeable and honest, so well worth watching his YouTube contributions.

Sounds as if his reputation has got around.

But to be specific what do you think about his comments on the Amarok V6 , and do these suffer from chain cam failure.

It's alright, the new Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger...

I'm not sure VW cars are any worse than others. I think the problem is that they are sold as a premium product when they're not, that their customer service is, in my personal experience, very poor and that they seem to be have unusually positive reviews in the motoring press. If you ever read CAR, it is almost entirely Porsches and other VAG products.

Thanks Adam.

i was referring to the previous model Amarok built in Germany by VW not the new model shared with Ford.

Yes, I was just sarcastically suggesting the new one would be OK with Ford's reputation...

I believe the Australian Amaroks were built in Argentina so that may explain some issues (not that I am familiar with Argentine industrial standards). Fundamentally, I agree with what your man is saying about VW being a bit of a toxic company, but so are Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla etc. It seems that once your brand is big enough and popular enough the quality of your product ceases to be very important.

The video got a bit boring, though, so I can't pretend I saw the latter 3/4 where, presumably, specific Amarok problems were discussed.

To be fair, many of his videos are Aussie-orientated, the home of the Ute. Some are still worth watching for international audiences.

I think his content has suffered over the last year or two because of the lack of new car releases and the more draconian lockdown rules Down Under, especially where he resides (in the 'knee of Sid' area).

Plus he is much more (brutally) honest in his opinions, which doesn't exactly enamour him with car makers allowing him to join the access media motoring journos on all those nice test day junkets.

Don’t think I’d want a Ford ranger either. Just as much trouble as every other modern vehicle. ( these are made in S Africa) . Ford and VW have joined forces on commercial vehicles, the Transit connect is the same as the VW caddy Cargo . For better or worse, time will tell .

I'm sure his videos are good. I was half bored and half thinking I needed to do some work! I lived in Australia for several years, and they do like to both spin yarns and labour points. It just felt like he wasn't making a lot of progress. Possibly the result of my tiny attention span. Maybe I'll check a few more out when I'm not supposed to be doing something else.

He does tend to use a lot of words when a lot less are needed - used to watch them but often skipped bits and would get bored with them.

He is correct about the Amorak, they have a fair few issues.

The Ford Ranger is no better.

Neither would be on my top 5 pick up truck list.

Ok the Amarok has a few issues.

But is the 2.0 litre Any better and is it true there are no air bags on the back doors ?
