Where is the diesel fuel filter on a Peugeot 308 1.5 Diesel (2019 model).

How to fit fuel filter and bleed it too?

How to fit fuel filter and bleed it too?

Why? On such a young car?

3 years old, nothing unusual about wanting to do a filter change.

Moving away from a dealer service at 3 years is something of a risk, saying goodbye to goodwill repairs after the quarantee expiry.

Dealer is over priced,,service £230 just for oil and oil filter!!

Anyone know the allen key bit socket size for the filter housing?

Plus how do you bleed them?

Is this under the rear next to the tank? In which case...

Should be an electric lift pump, so just cycle the ignition on and off 5 or 6 times for about 10s a time till the pump stops, without starting the engine and it should bleed through.

I've been told it's beside fuel tank.

Really? Perhaps in sub-saharan Africa where refuelling is sometimes from plastic containers of dodgy provenance, but not in Europe.

Rubbish. Fuel filters wear out and reduce efficiency and fuel flow no matter what country.

Mine was hesitating a little. Changed fuel filter, hesitation gone.

And I can cite dozens of cases where low fuel pressure errors have disappeared after replacing the filter.

For the cost and effort involved in changing a fuel filter up against the problems even a partially blocked one can throw up its a no brainer IMHO.

I think worse is if the filter material breaks apart and gets to the high pressure pump.

Armchair theoretical supposition or actual experience?

When our Focus in-tank fuel pump (which incorporates a filter) suffered imminent failure at 113,000 miles and 16yrs old, I asked for the in line fuel filter to be changed as well. On teardown inspection it was still perfectly serviceable with minimal accumulation of debris.

Despite the efforts of the car service industry to persuade us otherwise, I shall continue to regard filters as lifetime components which, with the exception of oil filters, merely require occasional cleaning or, in the case of modern fuel filters, replacement in the rare event of significant debris blockage. (My TR7 filter is easily accesible for cleaing - once every 20yrs or so ;-)

Our 21yr old rusty Focus went to the scrap yard with air and pollen filters at least 18yrs old (our period of ownership - the pollen filter was probably original).

No actual experience just hearsay as I’ve never owned a diesel.

I don’t think you can seriously recommend your (leave it alone) service regime for a modern high pressure Diesel engine. Any hard particles getting to the high pressure pump can and do cause serious expensive problems.

Really? I've had to change fuel filters because of problems before now. Pollen filters seem to get horribly filthy after only a year and air filters too but less so. I've tried the cheapskate approach of vacuuming them out but it just doesn't do the job.

Exactly! Totally agree, John has a rather strange approach to servicing ( or should that be non servicing?).

Ah cheapskate approach. Now you are talking my language.

I backflushed my fuel filter using a hypodermic syringe and 75% alcohol. Got a lot of rust out.

Letting the cheapskate side down rather I fitted a new one, but I kept the old one for possible fitting in series.

Before I got around to that I scavenged a filter holder from a very dead Yanmar knock-off diesel irrigation pump which had been regularly under the river every typhoon season for at least a decade. This has replacable elements, which I prefer. Still had diesel in it.

I should now be set to drive to Mauritania, fuel filtration-wise.

Of course it doesn't. You need a stiff small paint brush to get into the pleats. Then backwash them, like a Dyson filter.

There's an Oak Ridge research paper showing that fuel economy and performance is pretty insensitive to air filter clogging.

www.researchgate.net/publication/237339045_Effect_...y

This suggests (to me) that air filtration could usefully be supplemented, and, since I needed a lower air pressure in the air filter housing anyway to get it to suck in decoking water via an IV line, I wrapped the filter in paper towel,

Seemed to work as a decoke with no apparent negative effect on performance.

There was an issue with the paper towel apparently wicking blowby off the bottom of the filter housing, requiring frequent change, so once the decoke was apparently achieved I stopped doing it.

Looks like I need another decoke so may revisit. I'll probably try foam and/or textile this time around.

Debris that otherwise wouldn't have been captured by the filter and kept in the bowl.
