Golf R 7.5 - Golf R - driven less than 20K miles and needs a n - Golf r driver

Hi - I'm looking for some advice please. I bought a Golf r from a VW dealership in Oct 2020, have driven less than 8K miles, car has done less than 20K. and it needs a new gearbox. Gearbox is over £6.5K and whilst they will pay for that, I am being asked to pay at least 30% of the labour charge - over £600!!! any advice?

Thanks

Is it under warranty from either VW or the dealership? If so, on what basis are they asking for a contribution?

Is it a manual or auto?

Just out of warranty. Auto DSG.

How old is the car - If in original 3 year new car warranty then they should cover the cost.

If out of warranty the a bit over £600 is not a bad deal - especially as if you are paying a bit then the gearbox will have a 2 year warranty (if VW dealer). Is it an auto box?

Asking you to pay over £600 suggests their labour charge is about £2000 which is about 20 hours labour at their customer rate. It will not cost them half of this at in house rate and I very much doubt that it will take them more than a day to change a gearbox

Seems expensive. Shouldn't take more than 6-8 hours maximum to change the gearbox.

If its under warranty why are you paying anything.

I assume its a DSG auto gone bang?

Thanks - yes, just out of warranty. They have indicated the gearbox would have a 2 year warranty. Think I’ll pay the money, sell and buy something more reliable. My father has the same car and his steering rack replaced -£2k. Don’t think VW are as good as they were previously which is a pity as it’s a lovely car. It was just leaking, and was working ok. I’m also footing 70% of the labour cost, not 30% that I was originally advised about.

Another wee reminder that VW’s DSG gearbox is best avoided. We need to know the age of the car and whether it’s still under warranty or not in order to pass comment.

It's a Golf R one of the most abused cars on the planet. Owners with no brain thrash them unmercifully and then offload them when they start to give issues. You have no idea how yours was treated but I suspect it was in that category.

Just watch Police, stop, i**** for plenty of examples. Or alternatively listen to them being thrashed up our road.

Plenty get stolen and abused as well.

Thanks - I’ll avoid golfs altogether in the future. It’s a 2017 7.5 and just out of warranty. The other side is that when I went into a Toyota dealership the other day they were excellent and the warranty was pretty good. Had an awful discussion with a lady from VW UK executive.office also. ‘’Components are prone to failure and they just build cars’’

Does it actually need a whole new gearbox or can it be repaired?

The problem with a VW dealer is they won't repair a gearbox, only replace it. I think I'd get a specialist to have a look.

At £600 with a two year warranty, I can't see a specialist working out cheaper

This is a good point. Transmission specialists may just be able to repair the gearbox. However, I suspect the charge would exceed the £600 he is currently expected to pay.

I’d agree, however I’m just going to pay the £600 and take the two year warranty… may then sell it

I complained to VW UK after a series of apparent misunderstandings between the dealer, them and the factory led to a very unsatisfactory situation for me and the dealer. They said "we just import them".

I think I would take the hit and pay the £600 - as said above, an independent won't be cheaper. Then sell the car.

As well as the two year warranty - now is a good time to sell as used prices have rocketed!

I suppose you could argue it’s done well to get to 20k miles before the gear box has expired.

Exactly what I was told. VW UK were terrible. Basically said we just manufacture and import, dealers sell them… nothing to do with us. The person I spoke with was awful.

The gearbox is roughly £5000 , so a £600 bill out of warranty is pretty good, especially for VW, not known for their aftercare. I doubt an independent gearbox specialist can come anywhere near that, it's a very complex unit.

Yeh, despite the (well earned) anti-VW zeitgeist, they seem to behaving pretty well here. Its out of warranty so it'd be understandable if they declined any goodwill cover at all

Despite the fact there are certain cars in the VW Group stable I like on paper, the reliability of the DSG box turns me away every time. 20k miles is nothing these days.

Modern auto boxes are great, and personally have found the ZF eight speed boxes hard to better (as fitted to BMWs).
