Ford Focus - rev change - Lewby

Have a ford focus 1.6 Tdci that sometimes after changing into 4th or 5th gear the revs will increase slightly (around 200rpm) with no speed pickup, then drop and the speed picks up. This can happen 1-3 times in a row fluctuating then once going it's fine.

A similar thing can happen when travelling in 4th/5th gear at say 60 then look to increase speed but the revs increase slightly with no increase in speed before revs drop and speed picks up. Again the revs can fluctuate a few times before stabilising.

There seems to be no issue in 1st to 3rd gears no matter how much you try and race it.

I am guessing at clutch being on its way out but would like if possible to find some way of checking as I have been quoted £800 for replacement

When stopped, put it in third, drop the clutch at full throttle. If it don't stall, you need a clutch.

This is with handbrake on? Or an extreme pull off test?

Ford Focus - rev change - FP

Handbrake on. Rev it up, put it in third or fourth and engage the cutch. If the engine does not stall immediately, the clutch is slipping and needs replacing.

There may well be a lot of smoke!

I think you guess right. These are classic signs of clutch failure. Mileage? 800 seems a bit steep, even inc. vat.

I thought it seemed steep and can't remember if he said plus or including VAT. Need to ring some other places for a price but it made me want to be sure it's the clutch as it seems a bit intermittent. Is it possible that this is early days so sometimes slips and others drives like normal?

Probably includes a dual mass flywheel for that sort of cost.

That rings a bell!

Its at 120k miles so wouldn't be surprised

Forgot to update. It was the clutch

Thank you for updating us. A clutch that's on its way out will nearly always make itself felt in higher gears, so it was pretty much a foregone conclusion.
