Travelling along A14 this week I had to break heavy to avoid running into the rear of an LGV as it pulled into the 3rd(outside) lane. I noted two other trucks do the same. Is this allowed? Also, there are a number of stretches on the two lane locations of the M14 where overtaking is prohibited on up hill gradients but this is blatantly ignored.

The ban on LGVs and trailers in the outside line ONLY applies to motorways with 3 or more lanes - it doesn't apply on any other type of road - it also doesn't apply on motorways where the inner lanes are marked for specific directions.

They shouldn’t pull out in front of you but were you perhaps closing at an excessive rate? At 70mph there should be no need for heavy braking unless they pulled out right on top of you.

For years now I've always prepared for the absolute worst case scenario when overtaking an LGV or HGV, namely that the vehicle is LHD, the driver can't see me or isn't even trying and is inattentive owing to effects of tiredness, drink, drugs, texting, watching TV or eating soup in the cab - or all six distraction factors (!) and I proceed accordingly. bit.ly/3pSJGos
I swear that my very worst fears have proved to be real on quite a few occasions!

There is a section of the A14 westbound before the M6. M1 junction that limits HGV overtaking using the 2nd outside lane at certain times.

Been there and seen the above.nowadays see HGV. A I. 3rd lanes too.

And on the A14 a plus 1 mph crawl past another..

On the smart 4 lanes on the M5 you see HGVs in the 3rd lane even when it is quiet. This only encourages people to undertake. I think that a re-think is required all round on the smart network.

If only! 1mph is 88 feet per minute. They are only about 50ft long. Are lorry cruise controls so inflexible that they cannot be adjusted like a car's to expedite these utterly selfish slow overtaking manoeuvres which can take several minutes to complete? When there are only two lanes, e.g. that pathetically inadequate non-motorway A14, some give and take is needed.

Recent journeys on the I-405 (often seven lanes, usually five or six, outer one or two reserved for vehicles with more than one person) show how inadequate our roads are between major conurbations.

I wasn't complaining. But I understand. I do see lots of people inches away from the back of trucko waiting to dive past.

A truck will only go as fast as its speed limiter will allow (usually 56 mph these days, but possibly as much as 62mph on an older truck). There will inevitably be slight differences from truck to truck meaning one truck can go very slightly faster than another. The drivers of these trucks are most likely on a very tight schedule meaning they (probably) have less time allocated to reach their next stop than it actually takes to get there. Understandably they want to go as fast as it is possible for them to go at all times, but more importantly, not a fraction slower.

So any members are not or have never been a truck driver and therefore don't know what kind of pressure they are under (especially at the moment with huge, well publicised driver shortages), you might want to consider cutting them some slack. After all, being stuck behind a truck doing 56mph for a mile or two, frustrating as it may be, is unlikely to add more than a few minutes on to your total journey time.

Put on some classical music, hang back a little and just chill!

Also worth bearing in mind that if any car is really close behind, flashing their lights, gesticulating and such, the truck driver will invariably leave pulling back in (out of your way) as long as they possibly can.

Is frustrating when driving the works van so can go a lot quicker but have to stay slow but have times to keep to as well...do try accept it most of the time but there are a few drivers that do take the Mick which is when it's most frustrating...although as you say usually truckers pull in when they can.

I know that. But would it not be courteous after quarter of a mile or so to reduce speed by a fraction to let the faster truck pass? By doing so, for the price of a very few seconds it would increase the road's vehicle per hour capacity and thus reduce congestion.

Do you really think trucks are the only vehicles on tight schedules? Do not other users, e.g. delivery drivers, tradesmen and building site workers 'want to go as fast as it is (legally) possible for them to go at all times, but more importantly, not a fraction slower'? Why should they be frustrated by the selfishness/thoughtlessness of some truck drivers?

Put on some classical music, hang back a little and just chill!

I do, but then I'm retired and usually in no particular hurry.

“ But would it not be courteous after quarter of a mile or so to reduce speed by a fraction to let the faster truck pass?”

Absolutely agree. As a bus driver and trainer I do exactly that when another large vehicle is passing and I instruct others to do so also. It’s not the driver in the outside lane you should be angry with, it’s the selfish m**** in the inside lane who’s not letting them past. In a coach I’m limited to 62mph (bus 56mph) and I’ve sat and watched trucks battle it out over miles when all it takes is a gentle lift of the throttle from the truck on the inside to free up the overtaking lane.
