Golf 7.5 1 DSG 1 Litre SE - Noisy Suspension - golfauto11

Hello there,

I have recently bought a 2018 Golf (as above) with only 10,000 miles on the clock, the previous owner being a disabled lady. Does anybody have this model, and can confirm, if a knock from ANY of the four wheels, is characteristic? It only happens on certain type of bumps in the road, probably deeper one's. I can’t believe at 10,000 miles

I had a Mk7 1.4 prior to this, which of course had different suspension, particularly at the back. I can’t believe I need new shockers all round???

Can anybody comment?

Many thanks and regards.

M

Broken spring, drop links? I've currently got a rattle from my FOS wheel which I reckon's a brake pad. I'll have the wheel off and take a look when I can, but as the brakes feel fine and everything was good at my last brake clean/inspection less than 3K/ 12 months ago I'll leave it a while.

I'd agree with that. Either a broken spring or anti-roll bar drop link.

If its still under warranty, take it to the dealer!!

It is under warranty and it has been back to the dealer, who I do have infinite trust in, have dealt with them for years!! They can't find anything wrong, which is why I wondered if it is characteristic. All other replies (with thanks) wouldn't explain why this can happen on any of the four wheels, hitting a bump. I will just put up with it as it's not constant.

Thanks!!

Is there anything loose and heavy in the car, such as a battery, for example ?

If the car has had its first MoT, that should have located the problem, especially if you report it to the tester. If it hasn't, perhaps wait until then.

A couple of years ago (2019 I think) an elderly relative of mine bought a new Golf. Within a couple of months there was a suspension knock coming from the front. It was quite loud. It went back to the dealer but they claimed 'no fault found'. I laid down and felt around various suspension components whilst my son pushed down on the front struts in turn. Pretty basic stuff. It was very easy to feel a lot of play at the bottom joint of the front NS drop link. How the dealer could miss this was unbelievable. I wrote a note for the owner and he took the car back to dealer, who replaced the drop link. No more knocking. I guess it was defective from manufacture..

Jack up one side, remove wheel, ,put on axle stands. Ensure safe.

Take long prybar and attempt to move each suspension joint by levering.

there should be no movement.

Repeat other side.

Knowing VW's quality control, there will be a fault somewhere.

To do it properly take approx 1 hour..

It's amazing how much the sound of even the tiniest amount of play in an anti-roll bar drop link will amplify when you drive, so if you have any play at all you should replace them.
