Vauxhall Crossland X - Feels like tyres jumping & makes a noise - penguin

Hi all, I have a 2018 1.2 crossland x & when I drive forward or reverse out of parking space on full lock it feels like the wheels jump and it makes a banging noise ( just one bang) its quite scary when this happens. I'm just going to pick it up as its in vauxhall at the moment but they are telling me they have raised a tbs and it says that its the summer tyres slipping. When I took it in Friday for them to see the technician drove it and said he thought the gearbox had gone. I'm concerned there is something wrong with the steering. Has anyone else had this problem? Many thanks

If the problem is only at full lock then it is probable a steering/tyre problem. Or is it 4 WD if so could be the front differential- maybe needs an oil change?

... or a CV joint.

I noticed the same problem when I first had my Yaris, although I suspect it has a tighter turning circle. It only happened in cold, wet weather on full lock. I put it down to the tyres 'skipping'.

It's described as having 'modified Ackerman steering'. I know Ackerman isn't a perfect solution to the steering wheels adopting the correct angles and haven't a clue what 'modified Ackerman' is.

Thanks all, just worried as I drive late at night up country roads. Vauxhall say it does it when its 0 degrees and lower but I told them it does it when its above this temperature. They told me its the summer tyres slipping. Have contacted their customer care so will see how we go. I'm going to be getting a new car as soon as we can go looking again.

Thanks again

I own a 2019 Crossland X and get the exact same issue. I find it only occurs when the tires are cold. I would agree that it’s most likely a combination of summer tires, and the way the steering on the car has been designed. Vauxhall are aware of the problem.

I would agree that it’s most likely a combination of summer tires,

Don't let them blame summer tyres. A vast majority of cars on the UK's roads use summer tyres all year round and its perfectly legal and safe to do so. You don't gt legions of posters on here or other sites reporting problems caused by using summer tyres in winter other than the usual lack of grip issues in extreme weather.

If summer tyres in winter are an issue on Crosslands Vauxhall should provide all owners with a set of winter wheels/tyres and swap them FOC when the seasons change.

Having said that I feel its a mechanical fault with the car.

Don't be fobbed off. This is a known fault with the Crossland X.

Its called wheel crabbing. Google Mercedes wheel crabbing for more information. The Peugeot 2008 is built on the same base and that also does it.

Basically the tyre is dragged sideways across the tarmac which causes uneven tyre wear and jolting.

The car manufacturers call it a 'characteristic' . All the dealers are aware so don't pay a diagnostic fee for this.

This 8s getting to be a common feature of all-whheel drive cars. Apart from yours, it is also a faeture in some BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches etc. My Giulia also suffers on cold summer tyres. Apparently due to the differential and the Ackerman steering geometry.

Abd evidence of skimping on engineering design and testing.

And the result of larger and larger wheels with wider tyres having less 'give' in the side walls. Don't worry about it
