Autocar have analysed last years car sales and it's been a good year for Toyota , Tesla and Skoda.
Generally speaking buyers traditionally buying French and Italian cars are turning to Asian and Volkswagen products.

Somehow I doubt if Tesla will have such a good 2021, given there's much more EVs coming on stream from mainstream manufacturers, and they STILL are selling their cars at a loss.

Tesla volume is constrained by manufacturing, not by sales, so expect their volumes to keep rising.

Not surprising that Japanese and Korean cars are taking a larger share of the market. Experience has mostly proved that they produce reliable cars at affordable prices, maybe Honda a bit OTT. But generally worth the money.

VAG was once the go to brand for quite affordable reliable cars but sadly that is no longer the case. Too many issues around engines and gearboxes. Not the brand they were.

French and Italian have always been a bit quirky. Great of you get a good one, but if you get a lemon and especially with dodgy electronics. Ahhhg. too many memories of waiting around the Renault dealers while they rebooted the thing. Never again.

Happy with my Volvo at present and by the time it comes to change it, the whole motoring map will have changed drastically. See what is available then I suppose.

Maybe by then the current issues with PHEV, EV and Hydrogen will have been resolved.

Cheers Concrete

Beg to disagree.

Bought 4 VW's in succession from 1984 to 1996, that one stayed with us for 7 years. They were all totally reliable and whilst not the last word in driving pleasure very economical to run.

Move to the late 90's and it was clear they had lost something whilst Ford were starting to produce the cars they had failed to make for years. From 1999 to 2010 we had 3 in succession and all were totally reliable, cheap to run and totally reliable.

Move onto 2010 and Ford were loosing the plot so we bought a Kia. Totally reliable but whilst great value you could see where they saved money and refinement was below parr.

2013 we bought a Seat Leon TSI which was the first of our 4 in a row VAG cars. It was followed by 3 Skodas the last of which we bought in October 2020. Again like all the others they have been totally reliable and a pleasure to drive and own.

We have always kept an open mind and looked at Jap cars (Mazda, Honda, Toyota) beloved of this forum but they have never appealed like the ones above and the dealers have always seemed to drive us away with their poor attitude.

During this time we have also had 4 Nissans (not loved on this forum), all totally reliable and the K12 Micras were great runabouts, a BMW, totally reliable, great to drive, economical and cheap to service and Mini Cooper S which whilst we never spent a single penny running it (TLC pack) it simply did not endear itself to us and its habit of dropping oil on the drive (just like an old Mini) was not a desirable feature. That was swapped for the BMW after about 2 1/2 years, our shortest time with a car.

Unless things change drastically I do not see us moving away from VAG although its fair to say the Mrs desires a toy for her next car and VAG make nothing that appeals.

We shall see.

I was reading that in Norway BEV cars took 54% of the market.

Separate question how do they fare in such low temperatures? and darkness.

The average annual mileage in Norway is about 7500 miles, so 20 miles a day. That’s no issue no matter how dark or cold.

It is if you get stuck in the snow and your car is the only form of heating. It'll last half as long (at most) as an ICE car with the heater on from full charge/tank.

orway

That's due to the way that their vehicle taxation scheme is structured, it encourages EV (they also have a huge amount of hydro-electricity which doesn't hurt).

Crikey - that's more than one car every eighteen months! Presumably for several family members?

Given many makes will be selling those cars themselves, I forsee Tesla's 'profits' from that line of 'sales' drastically reducing this year.

After 25 years of purchasing/leasing new cars, the worst two for repairs have been Japanese. The Toyota had to have the complete air conditioning replaced while the Honda had a binding rear brake and an electric tailgate problem. The Jaguar and the current Alfa have only had trivial things go wrong.

Purchased new or s/hand?

Because your reply tells us nothing. For all we know, the Jaguar may have been new and the Japanese cars 10 years old...

The first line of the post you're complaining about clearly says :- After 25 years of purchasing/leasing new cars .........

You'll have to explain why that's such a tricky sentence to comprehend.

Not sure what your point is in relation to this thread. Are you seriously saying because your personal experiences of certain car ownership, that all other car from those makes will be as reliable (or not) as those you've owned? Have a look at the owner reviews, and you'll a vastly different story.

In my opinion, the most noticeable change in the past few years has been the significance reduced volume of Vauxhall cars which used to be built on mass and discounted accordingly.

Car Sales 2020 - Winners and losers - Heidfirst

Certainly both Ford & Vauxhall/Opel volumes/market shares have declined noticeably in Europe as they moved away from chasing volume sales at low margin.

Car Sales 2020 - Winners and losers - daveyK_UK
You can make good money on going for volume and small margins, just need to have the right product and be able to move with the market.
Problem for Vauxhall is they rarely had a unique product or the right product, so price compensation made up for the vehicles short comings such as the previous shape Corsa.

You certainly can (just look at VW [as a brand not Group]). You won't get the ROI to keep investors or management happy though.
