Tesla - The most ridiculous showroom in the world? - John F

Enjoying our last day of freedom yesterday, while strolling around Cambridge I entered a town centre shopping mall and noticed one unit just large enough to contain a Tesla Model 3. A couple were in an earnest but slow-moving conversation with the salesman about ordering one. After five minutes or so I was able to politely ask if he could open the boot and froot so I could assess luggage space. 'Sorry sir, the car is sealed and I have no access'. With an eye-rolling 'unbelievable' I made my exit.

Sensible Covid precautions, I'd say. If it were a regular showroom with access to valeters, the car can be cleaned after someone has accessed it. With one person there, probably a freelancer, that's not an option.

Was it a massive loss to Tesla sales figures with you not buying one?

My Honda garage and showroom are doing the same thing, they have valeters that clean the car after a service or repair job, all by appointment only from today, if you want to look at a showroom car you have to make an appointment.

though I think all garages are doing this...

I though Tesla owners sent luggage by train?

Being covid 'vulnerable', I didn't want to touch it, let alone access it. I just wanted to assess the luggage space.

The oil change intervals on a Tesla would make you happy...

I can fully understand having a locked up car in a city centre environment. The sole staff member would have no control over who was in it at any point. The purpose of the shopping centre sites isn't to necessarily sell cars per se, it's about generating sales leads to pass on to to a Tesla store, who (once everyone is open again) will be able to carry out a proper presentation.

Surely it wouldn't be hard for them to only unlock the doors on request though.

I do wonder whether the rules on the Tesla are like this because of the stupid keyless entry and start this thing will inevitably have. Even if the sales person had the "key" someone could just press start and drive it off for a joyride round the shopping centre, knocking over all those stalls of cheap jewellery or selling 'artisan' food which shopping centres seem to be littered with these days.

I've not noticed it as much recently, but car dealers near me certainly used to leave secondhand cars with all the windows and boot open on their forecourt on nice days. Presumably this was more about getting rid of the smell of stale cigarettes and wet dog than attracting the punters. There would be a real risk of it being stolen though if this was done on a car with keyless ignition. It's much easier for someone to just drive off than to tow or push it away.

I'm not sure whether people fully understand the situation regarding keyless entry.

Many modern systems have a disable function on the key and for those that don't, all you need is a Faraday pouch, available on the internet for a few squid.

Seen that 'showroom' whilst shopping in the Grand Arcade. Never particularly appealed to me. Rather like the nearby Apple store.

Given that Tesla's reliability is on a par with Land Rover's, I expect they were frightened that repeated opening and closing of the doors (done elctronically) would cause something to go wrong.

I can't fathom why the least reliable brands should both favour electronic door handles. Has anyone ever complained about the normal mechanical type?

Those who buy Teslas are buying a fashion accessory not a car. Their "showrooms" are "palaces of aspiration" - not places where anything so vulgar as practicality should be discussed.

Yes it is fast, technically advanced, but also rated as just about worst for reliability.

If you want to look good, buy a Tesla. If you want to get there, buy something else for half the money.

A couple of years ago my son hired a Tesla to take us all for a weekend in Palm Desert. The trunk lock failed, and the hire company tried to charge him alleging misuse. He refused to pay as even by then this was a well known fault. They backed down.

On every car I can think of the key has to be *inside* the car to start or switch it on.

These keyless things have been around for 20 years or more. Even a 2008 Mondeo has it. Hardly rare or unusual.

Were you seriously considering buying a Tesla? If not I'd suggest it was an excellent salesperson you dealt with as they judged you not to be someone who was too likely to buy.

it wouldn`t have hurt for them to open it for a look, and not up to the salesperson as to what a person is thought to be doing.

too many salespeople assume instead of doing the job they are there for....
