Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - John F

For the first time in over forty years I have been obliged to book a 'service'. As far as I can tell it involves about thirty quid's worth of oil (3.5 litres, which actually doesn't need changing as it's only done 5,000 miles), an oil filter (about a fiver) and a few minutes worth of checks. Arbury Motors have quoted me £200 - " the prices are fixed by Peugeot". Apparently it also includes a wash (also unnecessary). Transfixed, I resolve to bite this bullet just once as the warranty (which SWMBO insists on preserving) is thankfully for only two years. I'm all for wealth creation but I think the garage industry operates in a different financial world......in my world that's five pub lunches! I looked up the Cathedral Motor Company - the 'highest paid director' apparently pulls in north of quarter of a million. I couldn't find out how the dividends are apportioned or who owns them. I wonder how much the service mechanic takes home....

Are you sure you get an oil change John. Sometimes that’s not done until the second year !

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - brum

Don't forget to claim your free afternoon tea for two! (You have to book your service online)

www.peugeot.co.uk/owners/service-offers/online-boo.../

The official Peugeot price appears to be £199

www.peugeot.co.uk/servicing/servicing-and-mot/

As Steveieb says is service actually due? (Is car on a 2yr regime?)

You can always use an independent under the block exemption rules, but my trusted independent says it can get really messy in case of a warranty claim and future goodwill claims invariably go out the window.

How much do you think should be charged for the work?

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - John F

How much do you think should be charged for the work?

It's not skilled specialist repair work so £80 per hour max plus cost of oil and filter plus vat. No way should it take longer than an hour. I shall insist on no extras, e.g. windscreen washer. And yes, the official blurb does display my bete noire.....oil change after a year.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Cris_on_the_gas

You also have to pay for the laptop and software used to plug in to reset the service interval. The mechanic to check the fluid levels and tyre pressures and condition and take it on a road test to pick up the sandwiches for lunch.

You could get serviced elsewhere at VAT registered garage and warranty should still be honoured. However as mentioned above most likely will not any good will out of warranty.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Lee Power

Its a Peugeot - no laptop required to reset the service warning / due interval, its done in exactly the same way as all PSA Peugeot / Citroen products of the last 25+ years.

Its also usually shown in the owners manual.

Its handy to know as the modern ones fitted with navigation will insist on showing you all the nearby Peugeot main dealers on the navigation screen when the service due warning hits 0 miles.

Just think of all the good you are doing, you are keeping people in a job and the VAT will pay for some free school dinners! You can also rest easy if the valves coke up!

Unfortunately PSA still haven't sorted out the self destructing timing belt issue yet.

These Puretech engines are going to be a wallet emptying knightmare when they get older / higher mileage.

I used to do all my own servicing and maintenance until I bought a car with a warranty that was conditional on servicing by the dealer, so I know exactly how you feel. I should warn you, however, that once I accepted the idea of paying somebody else to do it, the attraction of scrabbling about under my car, skinning my knuckles and generally getting very dirty soon began to fade. Many years later, I’m now at the point where I wouldn’t want to bother any more and I can afford to pay the dealer’s prices anyway.

One little anecdote though. I had a series of Seats a few years ago - all very good cars, by the bye. I noticed after a while that on every service bill was £1 for windscreen washer top-up (£1 was worth a bit more back then). I would often think to myself that I had only recently topped up the washer bottle, so on one occasion I topped it up to brim full before dropping the car in at the dealers for its next service. When I picked it up, sure enough there was the £1 charge for screenwash top-up as usual. £1 was not worth taking them to task over, but it told me something about their practices. £1 on every customer’s bill? Yeah - that would soon mount up!

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - pd

To be pedantic they are charging you £165, not £199. Still not cheap I suppose but the going rate for labour at a main dealer has been £100+ per hour for years now so about par for the course.

I had this and did challenge them. The answer: "We have to check the operation of the windscreen washers and need to refill the reservoir".

Another one was charging for a new key fob battery, when it's not on the service schedule and ignoring the fact there's more than one key!

I was charged £10 for covid precautions etc at the PSA dealer in Milton Keynes. Apparently covers wipes, sanitiser etc. That sanitiser must be more per cc than Champagne.

Less than printer ink though.

Try Audi ! I have an A3 petrol - 16,000m on the clock. I've already had an oil change at 9,000 (£220) and now at 16k it's calling for the second service. The service dept inform me that this will cost £436 ( oil and filter + pollen filter + inspection). On questioning the price I discover their labour rate is £140 per hour! and I am in rural Gloucestershire not London.

I told them not to change the pollen filter ( Audi retail price £37) and it's now come down to only ! £335. . I bought a OE quality Bosch activated charcoal cabin filter from a motor factor for £6.80 and it took 10 minutes to change.

My son has an older petrol A3 and i recently serviced it for him -the parts (correct spec VW fully synth oil and OE quality Mann oil, air, & pollen filters) cost me £40 delivered from a well known factor and it took me less than an hour.

It's just a complete rip off at the dealer .

I service my own Jazz so the only costs are materials.

Maximum cost of any service? Under £70...Oil and filter service? £30-£40..

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Terry W

Grit your teeth and pay for the dealer service.

Regard it as an insurance policy against a future warranty claim. End of warranty go to independant. May cost you an extra £2-300 over a 3 year warranty period.

If you don't do this they will try and wriggle out of any claim.

The real problem is that dealers often make little or no money from car sales as we punters tend to shop around and go for the lowest price (generalisation only). So they have to recover their costs in servicing and warranty claims.

I don't accept that argument. I looked at the latest info I could find - they make about £1000 per car sold. That margin compares favourably with other competitive businesses.

I am in the third year of a 3 year service plan which runs out -end of march 2021 ,coincides with the end of guarantee and an imminent MOT. My third -so called "inclusive service" will include the usual checks, oil change etc and any recommendations of further up and coming work eg brake pad thickness, tyre wear and anything else.

I will have the third service done at the dealership and the next day have my MOT done by own independent garage who will then have the business of any follow up work.

Bye bye main dealer.

Happily I am covered for the next 2 years..

Servicing AND full European breakdown cover free from KIA.

On the Kia website it is showing £789 for 3 years. more than 11.000 miles a year

and £339 10000 a year.

Thats a lot of money for an extra oil change..

Not free. Included in the price.

It does make you wonder. My Volvo XC60 came out of warranty in March. It was due an annual service. The local dealer quoted over £550 plus another £50 or so for the MOT. Went back up to North Yorkshire and went to a Volvo indie. Full service and MOT, well south of £300. What a difference. Paid for my trip and some.

I went through the screen washer top up scam with my Skoda dealer. They were great except for this little scam. Always topped it and sprayed prior to servicing. Also photographed too. Had the £5 charge removed every time. 20 plus services a day with £5 free money on each, a nice little earner and no mistake. Whoever thought that one up made few bob.

Cheers Concrete

Someone's got to pay for the glass palace and nice end-of-month/year bonuses!

Their hourly rate makes plumbers and electricians look cheap in comparison. I paid £185 for my equivalent 1st year in the 6 year cycle for my now nearly 15yo Mazda3 when it was serviced at the local main dealer in January. About the same level of things done to John's.

To be fair to them, they did only charge me £40 for the MOT (which it passed yet again) as well.

I do remember it's first ever service (same place), which cost me £125 back in late Dec 2006/early Jan 2007. Around 50% inflation over 15 years.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Bromptonaut

Unfortunately the guy wielding the spanners sees nothing like that. In the law it's reckoned you need to bill three times salary to cover overheads. I'd guess the overheads of a dealership are probably higher.

Glass palaces don't come cheap, even compared to decent indie garages.

Maybe the time has come to split off the sales arm from the maintenance ones. One shouldn't be subsidising the other.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - mcb100

The 'perfect' dealership will have an absorption rate of 100%, in that aftersales (service and parts) will cover 100% of fixed overheads for the entire dealership. What sales then sell is profit.

In reality, the national figure is something like 70%, so sales are having to work harder to retain profit in everything they sell to keep the business in the black.

When I take my car to the dealers for a service, I always make sure I am wearing trousers that are easy to pull down, and have plenty of lube.......

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Brit_in_Germany

If it takes 0W30 oil, I would reckon on a dealer charging more than £8/litre - double that, at least.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Metropolis.
Long time since I have used a main dealer, but if I went again again I would be putting some kind of marker pen on the oil filter and a sticker across the sump plug so I could see if they actually did the work they are billing for. I think someone else commented above about screenwash although I cannot see on my phone, I would do that too (top up before it gets there). It is a shame to have to go to such lengths but I have heard first hand from too many friends and relatives who have caught these garages out.

Agree with the others, worth it for the warranty all the same.
Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - paul 1963

John, welcome to the real world! £200. isn't to bad considering the potential benefits of any warranty issues.

Just to compound your obvious wallet busting misery my first service was free....Thanks Vauxhall! only another year to go and then you can go back to your normal ( none) servicing regime. :)

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Ian D
Is your car the 1.2 petrol? If so I think the oil filter is the metal cartridge type rather than the filter element type, in which case I would put a small mark on the oil
Filter to see if they actually change it.
( I am not a fan of main dealers as u can tell!)
Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - barney100

Think it's a bite the bullet job, £200 for keeping the warranty sweet is probably sensible. After that go to Indies, seems to me services are change oil and filter then check this, check that. My 2008 Volvo V70 d gets an oil change at the right time and my indie gives it a once over, the Mot points out any safety issues and normal checks I do myself with perhaps popping into the tyre centre for a check every once in a while.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Avant

Your only hope, John, is if there's an independent near you who uses Peugeot parts and can reset the service indicator.

I was lucky: SWMBO's A3 convertible needed an oil change a few weeks ago, according to the car's computer (which must be obeyed for fear of invalidating the warranty). Nearest Audi dealer, 20 miles away in Yeovil, quoted £280 (and admitted on the phone it was just an oil change + 'general health check'). Independent (M-Tech of West Stour, 3 miles away) quoted £150, including the health check, and actually charged £134. They would use Audi parts if needed and they reset the service indicator.

Great service, and good to be able to support a local business.

Peugeot 2008 - First service, lamb to slaughter - Lee Power

Peugeot service indicator is so easy to reset its in the owners manual that comes with the car.

Friend of mine had several Golfs in succession, never bothered with the VW dealer for servicing, used his long time friend's workshop instead, to be fair they never needed any warranty work so he saved some serious wedge.

Bet you thought about DIYing it John and not bothering about the warranty.
