looking for some collective wisdom from everyone.

Car has been running perfectly until Wednesday evening when I started hearing and loud rattling noise cooing from the rear of the car (2015 Nissan quashqai 1.6 dci xtronic) for 2 days I was looking for the source of this noise looking under the car checking the exhaust, heat shield any plastic trim and couldn't find the noise.

This morning after finishing work I just happened to spot the the outside rear part of the roof rail was loose. Upon further inspection I noticed it wasn't attached to the car thus causing the noise.

I pulled back the plastic trim and headlining and could only find one nut the other presumably somewhere lost forever inside the shell of the car.

Now my questions are has anyone else had this happen to them?

Is it a common issue? (I've never had it happen on a car befor?

What could of caused it? (Could it be a manufacturer defect)

Apart from this the car has been a paragon of reliability even though on here it seen as a car of doom.

Thanks in advance

30 years ago, we had a customer come in with a Volvo of all things and it was a loose nut. It can happen. heat and cold expansion etc..

ORB, I thought better of you. You really shouldn't talk about your customers like that!

Actually, that customer didn't want to pay and drove through me (outside naturally) when i stood in front of him as he drove off without paying. I was thown partly over the bonnet and sideways, lucky he wasn't going fast!

IT didn't hurt much, and he came back to apologize and pay, but i called him that afterwards...!!

He was lucky as I hadn't yet called the Police.. I saw him about 3 months later in geneva and he was suitably chastened.

Certainly not the first and last time I have been assaulted by customers. (And threatened by mechanics for stopping their little scams! )

Feel for you. I work in business to business banking for a high street bank and we have a zero tolerance to abusive behaviour to the extent that we take recording devices to clients' offices now.

We have recalled overdrafts instantly where customers are abusive, like calling a member of staff the "P" word and a female member the "C" word. We have also had physical threats.

The businesses tend to fold quite quickly at that point, but if we cannot safely conduct business with them, what can we do?

I had a friend who worked for one of the large accountancy/audit firms and HE was very rude to a 5 star hotel receptionist (nice young lady too, as they tend to be in those places.) in Europe, a couple of years back.

Till then he was in contention for a big promotion, but as it was witnessed by his boss, he was "departed" shortly after their return to the UK.

I do not feel sorry for him.

Personally, I got used to being cussed, but whenever I WAS threatened or attacked I dealt with it.

It is a rule in life to be nice to the people looking after you / booking you anywhere!

A smile, even after a dreadful trip, got you a nicer room / upgrade to a suite at the Intercontinental, some really good dinner recommendations and once a date!

At T5, heading to the States, the couple in front of me were being really awful to the BA booking lady demanding an upgrade etc and when they went she looked really crest fallen.

I quickly glanced at the few people behind me who had clearly the seen the same and was then called forward. I said "take a moment to grab a drink first" and she disappeared behind the counter for all of a minute and came back, called me forward and upgraded me from economy to Business!

A few years back flying from Miami back to London, I was very polite nice and chatty with the ladies at check in. I had flown to Miami from Geneva to "celebrate" my divorce (for the weekend)

result, First class. (slept all through)

It was a nice ending to what could have been a difficult weekend. I had a good meal in Miami, got lost and was escorted back to my hotel by a fair group of latino young people who said that i was not in a good area.

Saw me to the front door of the hotel and refused to take anything or even be invited in for coffees.

Well and truly restored my faith in human nature.

How true. I was returning from Canada many moons ago. I have an unusual surname only reasonably common in certain parts of Scotland. The lady at check in asked about the name and I briefly explained. Turned out she was a distant relative I was unaware of. Talk about coincidence. She upgraded me to Clipper class for the journey home. It was their equivalent to 1st Class I believe. Excellent. The best flight I have ever been on. All for a bit of very polite chat.

Longer ago than that we had a stage comedian (a real one) who came in and tried to explain what he wanted (I'll spare you my french) but it turned out he wanted the radiator fan blade.

I'm sure you can imagine the gestures involved.

We laughed, but got it in the end. Then we laughed when we saw his face for the cost of the part!

I guess it could happen and the 3 other corners all seem solid as a rock its just strange that I didn't get any prior warning as I'm always putting on and removing the roof bars and roof box or when washing the car I wash the rails (I washed it last Sunday and didn't feel loose then. )

Prior to factory or manufacturer retro fit roof rails we used roof racks for holidays etc. b***** noisy things and the drag, oh boy. After a disconcerting incident which was nearly a disaster I took to checking the racks stability before and during any journey. One time the nuts had loosened and it was the adhesive gasket material that was holding it to the roof!! Scary. I am no slouch with tools and had secured it properly, but expansion and contraction and vibration can work things loose. You had a lucky escape so now you know.

Talking about rudeness at check-ins, my father-in-law was checking in behind a very aggressive type who did all the 'do you know who I am?' stuff and complained about everything.

FiL sympathised with the girl on the check-in, and she said 'Don't worry - we have a way of dealing with people like that. He's going to Portland. But his baggage is going to Phoenix.'

Took the car back to the supplying dealer this morning who sorted out the issue FOC within an hour so happy with the outcome.
