Ford Focus mk1 - Speedo jumping and abs light on - Stitchy360
So I own a Ford Focus mk1 (truly the bane of my life) the problem started as my Speedo dropping to zero (nothing else only the Speedo). Then it happened again but my miles went to dash dash dash then blank, but when I started the car again it appeared fine. After a couple of weeks of the Speedo being fine then it started to play up again and now my abs light has come on. Now the abs light comes on and goes off whenever it likes. Checked the car for codes and none have been found. So decided new speed sensor, we got it fitted and figured problem solved. Nope. The Speedo hasn’t dropped to zero but it is very jumpy, usually ok at lower speeds but anything over 40 and it starts jumping. And also the abs light is still coming off and on when it pleases.

So we decided to jack the car, wheels off checked abs sensor seemed fine. Decided to change gear box oil. Took the car a run and abs light went off but Speedo kept jumping. Then when I switched my headlights on the radio turned off. When I tried to get it to do it again it the lights came on and the radio stayed on.

Sorry for rambling but anyone have any ideas? I’m planning on buying a new car anyway but I still need to keep this running for a couple of months. All thoughts and ideas welcome!

On a Mk 1 Focus ,the speedo sensor sits in the gearbox. Depending on what gearbox is fitted, these can be a real pain to fit . Some are a push fit with a locking pin and some have a securing screw. However. the abs system is completely independent of the speedo circuit .There are 4 abs sensors ,one at each wheel. If the abs light is showing, then a fault code must be logged in the system.

Yeah the Speedo sensor was on the gearbox, it was a bit of a pain to change, the pin came out no bother it was the actual sensor that was the battle.

Our diagnostic didn’t pick anything up, I’m guessing that would have to be a garage to pick up that code?

Also would problems with my abs be the cause of the Speedo jumping?

If the speedo is still a bit jumpy, it’s possible that the sensor has not been located in the gearbox correctly. This can be tricky . Corrosion of the aluminium around the sensor hole prevents it sitting accurately. The abs is a separate problem . You will need a diagnostic test of the system.

IIRC old MK1 Focus suffered from battery earth lead corrosion problems that caused various symptoms. There's a connection under the battery that requires it removing to get to it.

Thankyou for your replies everyone. Worth a look around the battery for that never even thought to look! Just tried the local mechanic and he can’t get the car in for 3 weeks.

As for the speedo We will get another look at it, do you think it’s worth while removing it then trying again or would a possible wiggle be enough?

Just an alternative thought. Mk1 dash has problems with corrosion on soldered joints. I did one some years ago, had erratically jumping dials, cannot remember about lights misbehaving. I guess lights can come on if current finds the lamp provides an easier path to earth. The fix involves removing the instrument cluster and cleaning the circuit board inside it. It is fiddly but do-able and costs nothing, the corrosion is usually easy to see and it is where current is not going where it should, or going where it shouldn't. Theres lots of guides about it on the web. If you try it take a picture of the needles before you remove them so you can replace them correctly on their spindles. You will lose trip miles when cluster is disconnected but total miles will be retained.

Good Luck

I did wonder about the cluster but didn’t want to think about it because I was lead to believe that it had to be spent off to a specialist. I’m not perfect at fixing up the car but I am capable of getting the motor running, so to be told that I was kinda freaking out thinking super expensive and way more than I want to spend on it right now, so reading that makes the panic attacks stops! Thank you!

The car has run ok this week so far, by that I mean the abs light is still on then off etc, Speedo is still jumpy, but my lights and radio have behaved and it’s not broke down this week (we’ll touch wood) plan for the weekend is to get it up on the ramps and hopefully one of these ideas will help keep the auld yin running for a few more months.

I will keep you guys posted on what I find and if (fingers crossed everyone) I manage to fix it

when you jack it up check the latteral movement on the driveshafts where they come out the gearbox.

early fords were prone to diff bearings wearing, often diagnosed by a wavering speedo that may or may not stop working when going round a sharp bend and ABS lights coming on at random.

Normally if the original speedo drive is badly worn its a good indication of worn diff bearings
