I own a Mk1 2004 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI and ive owned this for around a year. Its cover 84,000 miles.

In the winter, last year, it would struggle to start on cold mornings, but would always start and then be fine starting thereafter. Summer came, no issues.

This recent cold spell has brought out the same symptoms, but also it did lose power while driving down the motorway, with the amber coil light flashing. I stopped and restarted with no issues after that. I decided to get it sorted and fully expected them to tell me it was the glow plug needed changing.

They didnt and told me it could be an intermittent sticking injector, as for the time it was in the garage it would start and run fine. I suspect it was left inside the garage for the few days it was in, sheltered from the cold. They suggested adding some fuel cleaner and running it for a week or so and repeating.

The next day it struggled to start as per, so i booked it in to have the glow plugs changed. All went well after the repair and the car fired up with no issues.

Yesterday morning, the first use after the glow plug change, the car started after a few attempts, but cuts out straight away after starting. Wont even let me put some revs on, just dies??

As youve probably gathered, cars arent my thing and havent a clue where to start .

Any advice will be gratefully appreicated .

Michael

A few thoughts- could be bad glow plugs- I had some changed and found a few were faulty and they had to be replaced. It is easy to check them with a volt meter- search on Y/Tube. Get the supplier to check them.

Old-dirty injectors- you can remove them and get them tested/checked, and then if necessary get reconditioned ones. Plenty of specialists around to do this.

Maybe do this first- Easy one- is your car battery OK? Have you checked it, or have it fully charged? A weak battery is easy to check. Any local garage could do it in a few minutes. Also check both battery connections. A faulty earth strap can cause all sorts of problems.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

I did fully charge the battery prior to having the glow plugs being replaced.

I didnt check the connections tho, so i'll do that first.

If thats fine, i'll get the injectors checked out and plugs tested again.

Am i right in saying that changing the injectors will be a costly repair?

80k miles is the expected life of the injectors on these . As suggested, get them tested and overhauled . Probably looking at around £120 - 150 per injector. Also a good idea to replace the fuel filter.

Is the starter turning it over fast enough? this can be a problem or the battery capacity low. You could try jump starting it from another vehicle with your battery still connected, if it starts your battery might need replacing, if it doesn't likely a new starter motor needed.

Hi, it does seem to sound and start find. Doesnt sound tired at all, but will just die soon at it starts running.

I will try jumping it off though, thanks.

I have a feeling the injectors are on their way out, but i just cant understand how ive gone from having a can that ran fine once started, had the glow plug changed, and now ive a car that wont stay running?!
