Hi,

Going to check out a VW Passat estate later today, and just looking for some tips on what to look out for.

It's got 213k miles on the clock, but speaking to the guy and he's been running it as a company car, so it's been serviced regularly and had all the important stuff done on it like recently had the cam belt done plus a load of other work that he's got proof for and says it's running really well.

Bodywork looks good from the pictures. The boot looks a bit messy as it's been used to transport building materials. The rest of the interior looks in good condition though.

He's looking for £500, it's just passed the MOT so I'll hopefully get at least 12 months out of it and I'm just looking for something to get me to work when the weather is s*** as riding can be a chore this time of year when it's p***ing down and blowing a gale.

So any advice you can give for things to look out for would be really appreciated.

With a wad of service history and a years mot , you can’t really go wrong. These are good old workhorses .

That's exactly what I wanted to hear :)

My only concern was an auto gearbox really, but having read around it doesn't seem like a big issue on these cars, but I don't know much about them so was wondering if there are any common things to look out for.

Auto box is no real problem on these. Something worth checking is to make sure the plenum chamber, where the battery and brake servo are located, is free of water. There is a rubber drain away bung under the battery that gets blocked, and then allows water to flood into the car and ends up under the carpet. This then floods the electronics for the body control module and the autobox ecu.

Thanks for the tip.

I don't know if they used the same autobox ten years on, but our '94 Passat 2.0GL autobox still worked fine at 242,000 miles when we sold it, having required no maintenance fluid changes or repairs.

If it's had the cambelt done recently, that's a big plus.

Same with the MOT - one of the few weak spots of this car is the front suspension top knuckle joint. It's all held together with a big bolt. To save pennies, VW fitted an ordinary steel bolt, not a stainless one. After a couple of winters it corrodes into a solid lump, so if the knuckle joint starts knocking, the bolt can't removed. So the top suspension arms need replacing too, and that's £400 to £500 each side for parts and labour. It's a pig of a job. But if it's passed the MOT it should be good at least until this time next year.

The VW diesels of this era with the 'PD' engine need a special oil as the camshaft operates the injectors as well as the valves. The oil has a special additive to prevent rapid cam wear, but as the car is 15 years old it would appear that the proper oil has been used. Just make sure you buy the correct oil for VAG PD diesels for topping up (you can get it in Halfords).

As the Elektrik&ACDoc said, feel the passenger side carpet. If it's wet, water is getting in via the heater plenum and will soak the 'comfort' ECU which governs electric windows etc. If it's dry, good.

Test drive if you can, it should pull like a train from 1500rpm to 3000+rpm. Older cars can have niggles with leaky vacuum pipes governing the turbo boost and EGR valve, causing jerky running or very low boost = low power. If it pulls hard from 1500rpm, good. Don't worry if the engine seems noisy - they were always noisy and clattery from new.

Good luck!

Great stuff. Thanks. I will definitely take it out for a run.

it did have the follow advisory on the MOT done last week

Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm ball joint has slight play front arm and dustcover deteriorated (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Hmmm - that means you're fine until the next MOT, but then it will probably need doing. And it will be £400 minimum.

.

Engine oil from eBay is a snip. Quantum long life oil (VAGs own brand) is only £25 for 5L but check the code you need. VW505 I think it is.

Any car at £500 is a total punt but these are generally good news, however as with any complex older diesel costs can multiply very quickly. They are much more complex than a simple petrol engine and can despite their reputation go wrong. You have also got to ask yourself why have they recently don’t the timing belt (not a cheap job on these) only to sell it for peanuts shortly after. It’s likely there’s a problem looming. Be careful and by all means go and view it but as with any company vehicle like this it’s likely to be no longer economically viable and thus the reason for selling it.

For less than £1,000 you could get a much lower mileage petrol hatchback like a Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Vauxhall Astra or go a size up to say a Toyota Avensis with less than half the mileage. This is where my money would go rather than a quarter of a million mile turbo diesel auto that could expire tomorrow.

Ok thanks. When I say recently changed cam belts, I think he intimated it was within the last 6 months or so, but I will double check that. He says the reason for sale is that he has a few cars and is looking to move one on. Again I will try and find out more on that.

I get what you mean and when I started looking I wanted a petrol engine car, but it seems most of the decent sized estates in my area are all 2L diesels. I'm still looking and haven't settled on this one, but definitely interested in it.

Do you need an estate? You'll get more choice if you broaden your search and go for something unpopular and petrol. Those diesel Passats were good cars but can be used hard as workhorses (the signs of building waste are a bit of a warning), subsequently they might be tired with a big bill looming around the corner, not the sort of thing you need if only running it through the winter.

Went and saw the car yesterday. It's in really good condition body and interior are both very tidy. It drives really nicely, I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the ride was, but I've been driving m sport BMWs for the last few years so most cars feel smooth compared to those.

I took it out for a 20 minute drive on country roads and A roads. Gearbox was surprisingly smooth (only autos I've driven have been the latest 8sp BMW sport versions) and when I put my foot down it certainly responded and you could feel it pulling along nicely.

I quizzed him on why he's selling it and it's because the tax is due on it and he's got no work on until next June and needs to put a load of money in his business account. He's also selling a couple of motor bikes and another car, so is clearly having a bit of a clear out. Loads and loads of service records and receipts from garages over the years, seems like a very organised person with everything relating to his cars in a big folder.

The cam belt was done around 20,000 miles ago and passenger mats were dry. All in all I got a pretty good feeling about the seller and the car so I think I'm going to go for it.

Good decision. Sounds like my kind of car. If you kept it a year and then threw it away , you would probably get £150 in scrap .

Does sound ok, these are one of my favourite big workhorses. Decent cars at this money go very quickly however so don’t hang around if it has a decent Mot and drives with no obvious faults you should’ve taken it there and then.

It's in the bag. Spoke to the seller this morning and will be picking it up Monday.

Thanks for all the help. It's really appreciated.
