Quick straw poll - would backroomers prefer (1) to keep the existing "competitive", "always shop around" insurance system in the UK; (2) a "rest of the world" style "any driver is covered" system; or (3) New Zealand's (unique AFAIK) state insurance scheme, whereby car insurance is not actually required: in the event of a crash, the driver sues the state and the state pursues the guilty party for costs.

I lived in France and Switzerland and had long term stays in USA and Canada/

". would be fine for me, but beware insurance costs.

Rest of the World style any driver is covered. NZ solution is interesting, but frankly i don’t like government interference so option 2 it is.

I’d stick with our competitive system which grants those who make the effort to shop around every year some of the lowest insurance costs compared to income in the world. I only pay £185 a year for our Toyota Avensis, I’m 43 and darling wife is 35.

Actually researching this was quite scary as apparently some US states don’t require you to have insurance at all! In Russia it wasn’t a requirement until 2003 and many others are the same so be wary when driving abroad.

..... and are prepared to work towards a useful number of years without claims. And don't forget (at least for older males) the financial advantage of including a named female driver.

Now beginning year 4 of ownership and year 4 of my own policy (after 16 years of company car policies until 2016) I am paying €239, which is fully comprehensive with a €200 excess and (as standard in Spain) breakdown recovery and a basic legal assistance deal thrown in. This for a 53 year old driver of a 2016 Toyota Auris 1.2 petrol turbo, privately garaged off- road and underground. Immobiliser but no alarm (no one seems to have one in Spain!)
I can drive any Spanish registered car with a valid Spanish insurance policy in force, and likewise any driver can drive my car. Since owning my own car, I've paid €330, €305, €219 and this year €239. Genesis Insurance obviously know where I live, and have a vague idea of which "sector" I work in, but my (zero) points on licence are of no interest as long as my licence is valid; the same applies to car hire in Spain. Road tax is €65 annually, paid to the local council.
I've been driving fault-free for 36 years, but the insurers are only really interested in the last three. The first two years' policies (with Qualitas/Admiral) were a bit pricier, but included "new for old" - a brand new equivalent replacement car in case of total write-off - and my 16 years as company car driver didn't earn me any discounts, as I was one of 30 or so in a "pool".

I think I'd stick with what we have as I'm prepared to put in the graft to compare what's available to me.

I do find the choices more limited as I'm the wrong side of 70 now and I'm getting the impression that I'm seen as an increasing risk....I've been claim-free for years too.

Doesn't help I guess that I drive a 7 seat MPV, though it's used as a dayvan/campervan and there's only ever me and the Mrs in it.!!!

Like others have said, I don't like the idea of having to deal with "government" under any circumstances.
