Dear All,

Not sure if this is the correct section to post but I am seeking some views about my daughters car insurance in relation to a minor bump.

Three months ago or so daughter caught the front bumper of a BMW with her back nearside bumper while pulling in to a space in a residential street. The person who owned the BMW came out and was really less than pleased and a little aggressive.

Daughter ( 19 years old ) exchanged insurance details with the lady came home and called her insurer to let them know. We didn't hear any more at all. Daughter took photos of the damage which was on the bumper only and extremely light and some of it looks like it would polish off. Anyway yesterday her insurance renewal came and it has gone from £1200 to £5000. We called the insurer who said that a claim was in progress although no one has written or called us about this absolutely no contact at all. They told us the claim was currently at around £2000 for the damage with a sizeable excess. I have to say I cant for the life of me see how on earth there was £2000 worth of damage and I am not sure how to dispute this or even if disputing it is of any use. Daughter is distraught as this now means she will have to get rid of her car as a £5000 annual policy fee is not affordable and ludicrous. It also makes getting to work extremely challenging.

Any words of wisdom appreciated

£2000 is quite believable these days, paint the bumper and blend into surrounding panels, then the standard equivalent credit hire car supplied by accident mismanagement sharks, repairs delayed to maximise hire charges.

The whole game is a rip off and it sounds like the third party owner wasn't exactly pleased that your daughter came clean where most of us here would have given her credit for honesty, knowing full well none of are as perfect as we might think, and done our best to mitigate the costs and got the job done for £250 tops which you would no doubt have gladly paid directly and nothing more to be said...it doesn't sound like the beemer owner was up for such an arrangement and sadly these days that too is understandable because they won't have known your daughter from a bar of soap.

However, you are where you are and the current insurer is doing their best to milk the situation and take advantage of your daughter, we can almost guess which insurer is involved here.

What i would do is contact a good old fashioned independent insurance broker, explaining the situation and offer them the photos to show what is involved and see what they can come up with from alternative insurers, you have nothing to lose by doing this and everything to gain, simply don't renew with the other one, cheerio.

If you have a good relationship with your own current insurer you could ask them if they would consider quoting for your daughter, same thing you can offer them the photos which they probably won't want as you are unlikely to be misleading them by the obvious fact you've offered the pics.

Hopefully others have some other better ideas.

Thanks for your reply. I think you would be surprised as to which insurance company this is! We have 3 cars with them in our house and they have now lost all of our business!!

I don't think it's unusual to hear nothing further one a liability accident has been reported.

I reversed into a car parked opposite the village shop around four years ago. Massibe ding in his o/s rear but just a scuff on my Berlingo's bumper.

LAck of proper observation on my part; 100% liable. Left my contact details on the car and subsequently had phone conversation with owner. Reported facts to my own insurer.

Heard nothing more but I know LV paid for repair.

TBH I think the premium probably reflects a young driver with an own fault claim; size of payout probably not factor.

Can your daughter shop around and see if she can get a better quote - even if it requires a black box?

Not a surprise re cost.

Many years ago a delinquent neighbour hit my wife's Aygo - it was scratches to the plastic bumper.

Wife reported it. Offers of expensive hire car, new bumper, with full respray, reg plate - total estmated cost of over £2000.

We didn't need a hire car. I took the car to my trusted bodyshop who do loads of insurance work. Half bumper respray carried out - other insurance company billed for £250.

I actually saw the car last week. Its now 14 years old and the bumper looks as good as new!

What i would do is contact a good old fashioned independent insurance broker,

Think you mean insurance assessor or loss adjuster?

Also worth speaking to the smart repair guys for their view on cost, then contacting the owner and offering a paid for repair. Some of them do work for BMW franchises. The circumstances post accident have the odious smell a stitch-up about them - unless there is bodywork damage the forum has been made unaware of.

The fact pics are available helps with the level of severity of the damage. Hope common sense will prevail.

A broker would be a reasonable call in terms of getting an affordable renewal quote. Whether degree of damage and therefor pictures is relevant is another question.

Nope, the young lady at fault has no say here at all how things now proceed, that was quite obvious from the attitude of the BMW owner at the time, luck of the draw when something like this happens, sometimes both parties are decent fair minded people who try and reach an agreement, sometimes they aint.

As it turns out the OP is already ditching the family's present insurer over this money grab, and i would do exactly the same.

They use official body shop repairs, a decent mechanic and 2nd hand parts could do it for 1/10th of the price, the other guy was right once it has been reported it is out of your hands and down to the insurance to sort it out.

I would do exactly what you did and take your nosiness elsewhere, just because it makes you feel better, but I doubt any other insurance company would have been any better.

Neighbours child on a bicycle ran into wifes car while I was washing it. could have taken to main s****** as its a new car and charged thousands, but since its not an insurance job I took to local body shop who did a great job for a couple of hundred pounds and both the parents and my wife happy.

Get some online quotes via the Meerkat people and others.

Then as recommended above, go to local brokers and Swinton if they still have branches - they were very good for me after a spate of bad luck a few years back.

Avoid a black box at all costs. They are not good for night working / evenings out and there seems to be a lot of issues where drivers claim driving normally where the box reports otherwise.

I too am averse to black boxes, there's quite enough stasi-esque big brothers peering into every aspect of our lives, without volunteering for your very own personal spy, what next a driver facing camera.

what next a driver facing camera.

What use would that be?
