Hi all,

I've had the engine coolant light come on my Golf; quite unexpected but on checking the reservoir it's certainly low (below min). Obviously this suggests that there's a leak somewhere in the system and that I need to get it to a garage, but just two quick questions:

  1. Is it safe to drive to the garage keeping an eye on the temp? It's 10 miles on low speed roads
  2. If not, I have no knowledge of the coolant currently in there - I know what's in the manual, but not sure if that's what is actually in - is there a safe way to top up to get it to the garage without causing issue (I have never in my life had to add engine coolant, so I am new to all of this).

Thanks for any guidance.

With a cold engine, just fill the reservoir to the max mark with normal water. You will be fine to drive it to the garage so they can check it out.
