Peugeot 108 - Servicing worth paying a main dealer ? - Lrac

I have no problem paying a main dealer to service my wife's car and could not fault the service we received whilst under warranty.

The issue is I believe I can service my cars to a higher standard because I have all the time in the world. I.e. once a year I strip the brakes completely and meticulously clean and de glaze etc before rebuilding with correct lubes etc at the same time as cleaning out the wheel arches and scrubbing both sides of each wheel. I cannot imagine anyone else going to this trouble.

I don't feel an obligation to go over the entire car at the same time and have always serviced items well in advance of the manufacturers spec. I feel the same sort of satisfaction that I get from cleaning the car myself. I have a 108 and a 107 I have no need for a down load or any kind of ecu interrogation.

I usually keep my cars for about 10 plus years then they are normally given or sold to someone that I know.

Should I pay a garage to service the car just in case I decide to sell sooner rather than later? Backs been playing up lately so pondering a couple of more different cars

As long as you stick with the manufacturers schedule, have the skills to do it right and use the correct oil plus you plan on keeping it til it’s near worthless then why not? The difference to the cars value at 10yrs old or more will be negligible on a city car like this but if you intended on selling earlier you’ll lose hundreds wiping out much of the saving.

You will lose out on software updates and any technical bulletins the dealer is party to so you may miss out on some tweaks and notifications to watch out for certain faults but it’s a robust little car that uses a tried and tested Daihatsu engine so I’d have little fear you’ll be missing much.

If you keep receipts, and a dairy of the work you do, then if you do decide to sell you may well find many buyers ( i do as you, meticulous and better maintenance than a garage would) would be quite happy, obviously different case if the car is still under makers warranty..

Yes some people could try and wing such a thing, not service a car for several years and then write a dairy in an hour, but a conversation between two people who understand cars would soon reveal the phoney, i don't believe anyone who understands cars properly would neglect a car in their care/ownership.

Very pleased to read of someone who knows how to, and does, maintain brakes properly.

A bit OTT, I think, to... once a year ...strip the brakes completely and meticulously clean and de glaze etc .

I haven't touched the rear drums of our X reg Focus since January 2007 (apart from cleaning and painting them) when at 45,200 miles a whining rear bearing was replaced and for some reason so was the rear brake cylinder (I think it was damaged in the process). Mileage now is nearly 135,000 and as far as I know the shoes are original. And possibly also the brake fluid, unless it was changed in 2007 or before we bought the car in 2004. I only clean up the front disc brakes at pad change time - approx 5yrs and 40,000 miles. If it works, don't mend it! But I think it's good to clean and grease the brake pipes annually so they can't be failed at the MoT for a bit of superficial corrosion.

Whilst under warranty may be worth paying. You have absolute proof that it has been serviced properly in accordance with manufacturers requirements. In the event of a major warranty issue may help resolve a claim amicably.

Thereafter DiY or independent is fine if you keep the car for 10 years. Less may impact sale price but probably no more than the additional costs you may have paid at a main dealer.

Well, evidence certainly, perhaps not proof. But it should convince any possible buyers later.

This is such a simple car to service, radio 4 afternoon drama on in background by the time its finished the front brakes are done, approx. 31,000 miles pads about 40% worn (on my 107). Probably call it a day at that point then next job when I feel like it.

You can pick up a set of NGK's for less than £10 so rather than check and re gap, Once a year I have a new set gapped and ready to go straight in so you could say that's OTT but for £10 and literally a few minutes , I would rather chuck them in the bin than waste time cleaning and re gapping.

I wouldn't want to neglect to change the brake fluid but I get this done at alternate MOT's.

Still undecided if I should I get a main dealer stamp on the 108 if I intend selling it earlier than usual..

For a non-racing car that really is OTT - a polluting waste of time and money! DOT4 boiling point is 230C. Its 'wet' boiling point (if it contains 4% water) is 155C. I think you would need red hot discs for many minutes to transmit enough heat through the brake pad abutting the piston skirt flange to raise the temperature of the piston head high enough to heat the fluid to even 100C, let alone cake-baking temperature. Brake fluid may be hygroscopic, but modern reservoirs are designed to be almost completely airtight.

Would be worthwhile keeping a check on the government website listing recalls and /or any owners' website which will probably list any other updates
