Ford Mondeo - Cost of 2nd hand parts - S40 Man

How is the cost of 2nd hand parts set? For ages I have gaffer taped up the cover on my wing mirror. It looked a bit rubbish but did the job. A few weeks ago the mirror got bumped again and the glass cracked (just in the corner)

I could get just the glass for around £10 but thought I'd I get a new whole wing mirror, that will come with a new cover also.

I thought £20 would be reasonable for one from a snap yard. I did screen scrape search eg breakers yard, but these gave very high cost around £70. lots on eBay for around £35

I kept making offers for the £20 I wanted to pay and after a few weeks got one for my target price.

My question is how are the price of these set? Does anyone pay the full high price. I was lucky on that just the edge of the mirror was cracked and you could still see OK, so not in a rush. Mk4 mondeo from 2008 are starting to get old now so presumably there are more in the scrapyards and starting to get fewer on the road. Mk3 mondeo wing mirrors are cheaper.

Any thoughts?

A scrappy I used to use many years ago charged half the new price on most parts. He specialised in Ford parts and had a book with all the new prices in it (pre-internet era).

As with any business prices will be set to factor in the cost of goods, labour involved and the price of the competition - in this case the cost of new parts. Doesn’t stop you making a cheeky offer though... you don’t get if you don’t ask.

Price is set purely by Supply & Demand, ie basic Economics - if the cost of parts/materials plus labour exceeds that price, it'll either be tolerated as a short-term loss leader or not sold at all!

If it was me-i'd check the price of a new wing mirror (glass and holding) first and use that as a target price to beat.

You might £save time(time is money) on endless surfing, £save costs driving to scrap dumps not to mention the frustration of a second hand bit missing or the darn thing not properly fitting.

They can also charge relatively more for a part which is frequently damaged - eg: wing mirrors, light units, bonnets, bumpers - than infrequently damaged items - eg: rear seat squab, rear door trim etc

Exactly, check the prices of speedos/tachos for motorbikes............. I would guess >95% of these get damaged in a spill.

Once I went to a scrap yard where there was notice that said, "This is not a scrap yard, it is a car dismantler's yard and ...."

You expect to pay more at such a place.

Why does this revelation not surprise me? Customers in most sectors have been gouged to a greater or lesser extent as long as buying and selling transactions have existed. It'll be interesting to see how this court case pans out. New parts prices no doubt have a knock-on effect on second hand goods as well: www.insurancejournal.com/news/international/2018/0...m

A company I deal with had been a family concern since it was established 20+ years ago. The owner retired and sold-up to a multi national, their prices went up ~25-30% in the first two years!

I make you right, I got the impression that passenger side wing mirrors were cheaper than drivers side, probably due to more frequent mirror on mirror charge clashes.

"Almost complete lack of competition" and "utter, shameless greed" are two factors never admitted to when prices go up. Instead, there is constant flanneling about "the falling exchange rate", "the cost of Brexit", "uncertainty about [insert trending topic here]"; "the cold snap"; "European safety regulations on [.....]" , "disrupted oil production owing to the civil unrest/war in [insert oil producing country here...]"; "millions of motorists driving without [insurance/road tax/faulty headlights/rear view mirrors]" and the like. Ebeneezer Scrooge is alive and well and prospering in the car parts business!
