Mondeo 1.5 ecoboost Vs Mazda 6 2.0 petrol - stuffandblah

Looking to get a decent sized petrol family car, can anyone recommend the Mondeo (1.5 ecoboost) or the mazda6 2.0 tourer?

Thanks

Given it is such a new engine, I'm not sure anyone could give an honest recommendation for the Mondeo. On the one hand, the previous (1.6) ecoboost seemed to be pretty good and reliable, but that was a 4 cyl, whereas the 1.5 I believe is a 3 cyl. The notorious 1.0 ecoboost is also a 3 cyl, not sure if they are in any way related, but frankly I'd be a little sceptical myself of getting one without there having been a few years to establish its reliability credentials.

Because of this I'd go with the Mazda all day long, it is a fine looking car and with the petrol engine, has a great reputation for reliability.

I'd add the Skoda Octavia (or Superb if you need more room) to that shortlist. The 1.5 150 bhp petrol engine has a lot more low-down torque than the Mazda, and is less of a risk than the unproven Ford 1.5.

Used or new? I’ll assume nearly new and a healthy budget and while I’d personally be aiming towards the big Mazda there’s little to fear from the Mondeo as long as you avoid the troublesome Powershift auto. If it’s a self shifter you want then I’d definitely go for the Mazda.

The 1.5 Ecoboost in the Mondeo is the older 4cyl belt driven motor that’s based on the old but robust Yamaha Zetec SE and doesn’t tend to suffer from any real vices unlike the 3cyl 1.0 and from what I hear the new 1.5 in the ST too.

I’d also add in the big Skoda Superb with the later belt driven 1.4 TSi petrol, it’s a lovely big car but as with all three of these blue collar barges they hold their money better as an estate rather than a hatch. Again the auto is one of those complex automated manuals called DSG in this case and while vastly more robust than Ford’s effort they’re still regarded as weak and very costly to repair or replace. Stick with manual here even though an auto does suit the relaxed nature of the car.

Looking for used, a few years old.

Agree with the comments about the ford, highest mileage I could find on autotrader is 46,000 miles, so may be too soon to tell on the 1.5.

Don't really want another VAG car, last 2 were VAG and want a change now.

Looks like Mazda may be the way to go.

“Looks like Mazda may be the way to go.”

It’s where my money would go dependent on history and condition.
