Mazda 2 - Engine Rattling Above 2000 Revs - Chessell

Hello everyone.

Thanks to the help from the people of this forum, I was able to pick a Mazda 2 for a reasonable price as my potential 2nd car.

On recommendation from friends and family, I had it taken to my local garage for a thorough inspection so I didn't buy anything fishy. The only thing that came up was a rattling noise coming from the engine when it accelerates above 2000 revs - the mechanic couldn't determine the cause without looking into it further, costing me yet more money for a car I may not own.

The car is only 5 years old and nothing is mentioned on the MOT.

Can you help?

A nervous buyer.

EDIT - Also posted in the technical forum.

I don't think I've ever heard of a mazda petrol engine blowing up. A mazda diesel is a different thing altogether and is to be avoided at all cost.

There are loads of these around and if you feel there is any problem with this one , choose another. An MOT tester wouldn't be interested in any engine noise, it's not part of the test.

I'd probably say buy with confidence (petrol engined) ,as it's unlikely to ever cause you any trouble.

Nothing would be mentioned on the Mot unless if affected the emissions. But assuming it’s a petrol model and assuming it has proof of regular oil changes it’s most likely a rattling heat shield or something similar. I ran a Honda Civic with a mildly rattling exhaust heat shield for years because it only did it at certain revs I couldn’t be bothered fixing it. The engines in these rarely go wrong but without hearing it or looking at it in the metal it’s impossible to be certain. If you have doubts walk and buy something else.
