MGZS Remind you of anything - GM parts bin bits - oldroverboy.

There appears to be a school of thought that the powertrain of the ZS is being built "just good enough" low towing weight, low torque? remind anyone of Astra gearboxes? (GM bits)

Although I liked driving the car as a day to day thing on a test drive (or 3 )..... ok on all counts, but only that.

I decided to stick with the KIA venga.

Someone waiting more than 6 weeks for a windscreen already, spare wheels not available? apparently 6 weeks+ delay for parts?

Thoughts anyone?

If they haven't got the product population in the UK - ie not many cars sold, they won't invest in putting the parts stocks in the UK or Europe so it all has to come from China-it's as simple as that.

Reading reviews for the MG3, a lot of the criticism seems to be related to the dealer network not being anle to fix things, and not being able to get parts. I suppose this is to be expected with such a small dealer network, but it is understandable that it would put people off.

As for parts bin raiding, that wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, given the amount of times the Chinese motor industry has been accused of blatant plagiarism, taking apart a car of the same type (i.e, small SUV) from another manufacturer and copying all the fiddly little bits to save development time and costs does not seem too much of a stretch.

ORB. You're going to have to remind me of what's wrong with Astra gearboxs. Can't recall reading of problems on the Astra K forum.

Common issue with alot of manufacturers when they fist come to the UK, I recall having to wait ages for Hyundai and Kia parts in the late 90s and to make matters worse the prices where extortionate.

Drivetrain mostly GM tech built DOWN to a price..... Someone complaining of timing chain at 28000 miles.

The GM M32 gearbox is famous for prematue bearing failure. Later versions were supposedly upgraded but lots failed in various Astras, Vectras, Alfas etc.

So we're not talking current model Astra and therefore not what would be fitted to MG models?

I doubt GM are alone in building to a price. Most manufacturers do it.

Indeed, but the Japanese tend to do it by economising on the quality of the interior materials (although they are perfectly robust), and not on the mechanicals. Much less disastrous.

To clarify, is it the 1.0 engine which is the GM engine & gear box in the MG models?

Where is the old tech 1.5 petrol engine from?
