Should fuel tankers be restricted from major roads - Bayode1

About some days ago, there was an accident in the city of Lagos Nigeria, on popular Otedola bridge in Ikeja, a fuel tanker loaded with highly flammable product (petrol to be precised), plying the highway suddenly lost its grip on the busy road, to cut the long story short, the aftermath of the accident razed at least 54 vehicles, with 9 deaths including children and left many injured. Before the occurrence of this incident, it has been a topic and debate on social media, suggesting the restriction of these dangerous vehicles within a range of time on the major roads. Do you concur to this suggestion? As this could reduce the rate of sudden deaths and dangers on roads.

The gory photos of the scene can be seen below; www.eaglesnewsmedia.com/2018/06/petrol-tanker-caug...l

Maybe in some countries the safety record and professionalism of fuel transportation could be called into question.

I'm not aware this is an issue in the UK, but if there is a covered up history of road tankers leaving a trail of destruction here then i would be interested to see it.

Were the social media discussions relating to safety issues in the UK, in which case whay one wonders, or was this regarding issues in third world countries?

I seem to recall another fuel tanker crash in Nigeria a few years ago. Nobody injured or killed in the accident.

Then the looters got started. An hour or so later it all went up, the death toll in 3 figures.

I suspect that the issue in this case is far more to do with vehicle maintenance or driver competence than it is to do with the fact that fuel tankers use the same roads as the rest of us.

Not an issue in UK or EU.

Might be in Africa.

It is politically incorrect to explore and explain the extent of incompetence in sub-saharan Africa. Road deaths in Nigeria are apparently around 25 per 100,000 population per annum. In the UK there are fewer than 3.

No, it's not

I agree that Nigerian fuel tankers should not be allowed on U.K. roads. That’s solved that one. Next.

One of the major causes of congestion at the Dartford Tunnel is the need to escort fuel tankers which requires stopping of other traffic through one of the tunnels whilst a convoy of them goes through. Northbound (tunnel) traffic always seems to be more liable to far more congestion than the southbound traffic over the bridge. The case for the Lower Thames crossing mentioned this as an issue during the consultation stating escorting hazardous traffic would not be necessary in the new crossing! A four lane motorway feeding a four lane crossing should not otherwise cause such a big tailback even allowing for extra local traffic using the crossings. Banning fuel tankers from major roads is a non starter however as it would increase the cost of fuel owing to the higher transport costs.
