I had next to no expectations. I suppose it's better that there should be talks rather than hostility, but given that Trump is such a naive, ignorant and temperamental guy, the most likely long-term outcome is that North Korea scores some prestige and Trump is made to look like the fool he is.
P.S. Just read this: "'There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea,” Mr Trump tweeted after Air Force One touched down at Andrews Air Force Base on Wednesday, adding: “Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office.”'
It takes a special kind of stupidity to believe this.

You cant take the man seriously. He praises Kim whilst knowing he is a murderer, killing his own in horible ways as well as American citizens.
At the same time he villifies Trudeau and the EU as being worse than China and wants Russia included in the G7 (G8?) talks.
I think the man prefers the company of like minded people. That would be totalitarian despots then!

You know the saddest thing about all this is? That Hillary Clinton would've been far worse. What has Western politics descended to? We see the same in the UK, where we voted back in a very poorly quality non Tory to keep out Lenin impersonator and his bunch of Marxist, terrorist-friendly chums...
I would argue that Trudeau isn't exactly a 'great leader' either - a virtue-signalling male feminist SJW if ever ther was one. In fact we seem to be getting a whole bunch of naive idiots (May), SJWs/Virtue-signallers (Trudeau, NZ's PM, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, etc) and nationalist bufoons/power-hungry self-publicists (Trump, Putin, lots more).
Hardly any with much common sense, leadership or management skills (Trump is actually famous for hating firing staff in person [he gets others to do it or by letter/email] - quite ironic given the TV show he used to front), never mind any sound policy ideas or to put together teams of good people who know what they're doing.

Many of us on here - perhaps most - went through periods of training to get the qualifications and/or skills that we have. It's frightening that politicians get no training at all: come an election or reshuffle they can be drafted into running a department about which they have no knowledge or experience at all.
But at least as MPs they've had some experience of politics. Unlike most previous US presidents, Donald Trump hasn't even been a senator or state governor. There is something seriously wrong with a system that allows that to happen.
Whatever your views may be of the Royal Family, at least their presence makes it impossibe for that to happen over here. I often wonder what Winston Churchill would have been like if he hadn't had Clement Attlee (in the wartime coalition) and King George VI to restrain him.

Had Obama the same result, they'd have been worshipping Him in the aisles and showering Nobel prizes on Him.
The USA had reached the point where they needed a non career politician, one not infected with career politician genes, we in the UK are past that point too, sadly we do not have a Trump waiting in the wings and we will decline ever further until we do.
|
I don't think Obama would have had the same result. He wouldn't have arranged a meeting with an outcome that would have been virtually useless (as it does not allow any verification what so ever) at the moment. He would have probably had people work in the background for longer to ensure that a decent deal would or could be put together before announcing it to the world.
I also suspect he would be more circumspect about meeting a man who arranged for the murder of his own brother by poison and uncle by feeding him to the dogs, others by anti-aircraft guns and dancers for no apparent reason.
Trump seems to get on better with totalitarian leaders than freely elected ones – best buddies with Putin, Jong Un and Xi Jinping. Perhaps that’s where he wants to take the USA?

Unfortunately Obama was largely effectual, so I doubt he would have done what you said. He was outplayed by Putin over Syria. And Trump got the world to vote for strong sanctions against North Korea unlike Obama. Trumpet does in many ways come across as loathsome and a m****, but let’s judge him by what he achieves, if anything, at the end of his term(s).

"One not infected with career politician genes..." So what the Americans got was someone who didn't have a clue about how to govern - an incompetent with little brain-power but a big mouth.
"...sadly we do not have a Trump waiting in the wings and we will decline ever further until we do." May God help us if the majority of voters in the UK actually think this - probably most here share the disgust the man has created in the minds of a sizable number of Americans and almost uniformly in the rest of the world.

What good has he done for the general US population? He speaks lot but seems to achieve very little so interested why you would want a politician like that in the UK? Anyone can spout off things but very few can actually get things done.

I've not said our own government has done great things but would you want to swap what we have now for Trump?

Yes, but in what way? He's not made any big changes in the US so why would you think he would do more here?

What's wrong with social justice or do you prefer gay bashing, keeping women on 60% of men’s' pay and not allowing them to take out loans without their father's permission.
Perhaps you don't like it that the Caribbean gentleman is a doctor or the accountant who's parents originated from Pakistan is allowed to trade as a professional person in this country?
Perhaps there are too many under privileged people clogging up the local hospital making you have to pay for private medicine.*
Or do you have an issue with the person that is trapped in the wrong gender and is allowed to freely express it without really harming anyone else!?
Surely to fight for all members of a community is the right thing to do?
And you seem to ignore the fact that Trudeau was elected, as was May (by Conservative politicians who were voted in by the electorate) or do you think the will of the people doesn’t apply if it isn’t the same as what you want?
* Work provides me with health insurance and I sent my kids to private school but I don’t mind sharing some of my good fortune with the person that sweeps the road or cleans up the mess in the hospital through a fair taxation system.
