The 220 diesel engine of Mercedes seems to used in lots of different models from E Class, Slk, C Class etc. Got me wondering which engine has appeared in the most wide range of models.

Most VAG engines are widely used across VWs / Audis / Skodas / Seats etc, leading to hilarious letters like this:

I would say Rover V8 or BMC A series.

I would say Rover V8 or BMC A series.

In this country I’d say the A series or maybe Ford’s Kent. Both were used for many years in many difernt vehicles. In Europe, some of the older Peugeot petrol engines were used for aeons in the 403/404/504 ranges all over the world. Fiat’s FIRE has been going for ever and finds itself in many different ranges.

Historically, it was quite common for engines to be used in many different vehicles, especially in the USA.

The A series was in production for the best part of 50 years and the even the list of Austin, BMC (etc.) applications is huge, plenty of ‘overseas’ models too. Renault’s ‘Billancourt’ four cylinder first appeared in 1947 and was still going strong in the 2000s, that found its way into all manner of vehicles around the world. I think the last was the Dacia Denem but it may even still be used in new vehicles in South America.

The modern engines cited may have the numbers but for longevity and variety of applications these two take some beating.

Diesel engines are complex and expensive to develop plus there’s the fear of constantly changing legislation too so manufacturers have been cooperating, jointly developing and buying in other firms technology.

Probably the most widely shared engine recently is the PSA 1.6 diesel which has been in everything from 207’s through Mini’s, the bulk of Ford’s Range, several Mazda’s and even some Volvo’s to mention just some. Renault’s 1.5 dci has also seen service from Mk II Clio’s to the current model Mercedes A class and Nissan Qashqai. Fiat’s 1250 diesel is another very widely used motor. Be interested to see the production numbers on them.

Not sure of the numbers but I'd second PSA diesels as having about the most variety of models and makes.

They seem to pop up everywhere - not just the 1.6 but also the 2.0 and 2.2 which have popped up in Peugeots, Fords, Citroens, Land Rovers, Jaguars and goodness knows what else.

Even the V6 is quite varied - I'd guess a Land Rover Discovery and a Citroen C5 never had much cross over in the customer department.

Toyota have sold 10+ million hybrids since the late '90s - the vast majority of these have the 1.8 engine working on the Atkinson cycle

Not manufacturer specific but 2.0l diesels all seem to be pretty ubiquitous. They all seem to be similar if not identical in output without any real character or defining attributes.

The PSA 1.6 diesel widely used , others that spring to mind are the Renault 1.5 diesel and the VAG 1.6 and 2.0 diesels.
