Just back from holiday. Booked a mid-range hire car and ended up with a 2-month-old Nissan Sentra. Worked perfectly and comfortable too; drove nearly 2000 USA miles in two weeks, absolutely no complaints.

But the car had no character or style whatsoever. Nothing to make it interesting. It was just a vehicle and nothing more.

2002-2008 Vauxhall Vectra. A bland style free box on wheels with zero charisma, a drab grey plastic interior, numb dynamics and a range of trouble prone engines. Nowhere near the car the Mk III Cavalier had been. The first Vectra after it is excused solely because it was at least reliable.

Mitsubishi carisma.

The beginning of the end for Mitsubishi. I was selling for a large Mitsubishi main dealer when these came in and I remember the disappointment we all felt. We were told to expect a genuine Mondeo rival with none of the limits on imports we suffered from with the rest of the range which all came from Japan as it was built in the Netherlands. Instead we got a bland, cheaply built hatch and saloon that had none of the Ford’s driver appeal. The engines were good and they certainly were reliable but no diesel model was a killer in that market. They then followed with Volvo and bought in the rough old Renault 1870 diesel motor to help then facelifted the rest. The changes to the suspension and steering were a substantial improvement but it was all too late. Later models suffered from even cheaper interior quality so rattles and bits of trim falling off were common complaints. That said, I’ve bought and sold loads of these in their later years and none have given any bother. I ran one as a second motor until recently (a late model 1.9 diesel) and it drove very well and gave no trouble at all. I sold it for a profit after a year of travelling all round the country doing my wee hobby of hill walking when I had the time. Point I’m rambling to here is that although cars can be dull when new (Toyota Corolla springs to mind) they can be entertaining as they enter banger status purely because they cost buttons and just keep on going. That beating the system smug feeling is enough to lift otherwise dull cars. The second gen (to us) Vectra never had this bonus with even the basic petrol cars prone to problems and the Fiat diesels were garbage.

Mitsubishi carisma.

Yep - a car that was exactly the polar opposite of its name.

I was given a nearly new VX Vectra for use in Northern Norway. Fitted with winter tyres. Was parked in the street, in -20C, or worse weather.

It never let me down and I was always able to get to work. Not very exciting and a bit dull, reliability is boring. I was glad I had that instead of a LR or other supposed premium brand.

I think there's a niche for cars that just do the job without fuss or 'character' and Nissan produce models to fill that niche.

Only driven two Nissans. Both were hire cars, one in Ireland and other in USA.

If they were a sandwich both were processed cheese on sliced white.

What we're calling 'characterless' is a car that is boring to drive but just gets the job done. My Volvo V60 is a bit like that.... but you could argue that that's its 'character'. I can't deny that it does the job it was designed to do- and with a fair turn of speed too. It's just that the steering and handling are so lifeless. That's why I'm trading it in, sooner than I sensibly should.

We've all met people like that too. I qualified as a chartered accountant and met plenty, but most were good at their jobs. Most of my career was in accountancy training so I must be boring on two counts....

Toyota Corolla. I had one in Zambia from the mining company 'pool' back in 1973. I believe they are still made. I remember amusing myself hurtling around tailings dams on opposite lock. Automotive white goods.

I guess members opinion on what defines a car as being characterless is going to vary in the same way as defining cool. But to my mind the car would have to look totally anonymous, be totally unremarkable to drive, and in all other ways totally forgettable.

To me, this would rule out Avant's Volvo as, not only did they look quite distinctive with that very pronounced 'shoulder line', but i don't feel any car with a 5 cyl engine could ever be described as characterless with that off beat burble conjouring up images of UR Quattro's!. Same goes for a 3 cyl engine or indeed any other car with a distinctive exhaust note!.

I did think about mentioning the Proton Wira, but then i remembered a friend having a plain white saloon, complete with steel wheels and wheel trims. Utterly forgettable up till now right?, thing is, her one was the 1.8, which had 135bhp. In the wira, which didn't weigh very much at all, this made it a bit of a sleeper and much fun could be had embarrassing drivers of much trendier and overtly sporty machines!.

Which of course made it memorable.

Used to sell these too. Good enough wee cars, just a Lancer underneath and we know how much fun they can be with a meaty engine up front. Chassis was ok, quality better than the dearer Carisma and even the 1.5 petrol was lively, the 1.8 twin cam was quite good fun but to me the sweet spot was the rare 1.6 16v with 111bhp or the 2.0 turbo diesel. But these are at their best as next to worthless banger runabouts. They’d run and run if you kept the rot at bay and as no one wanted one they were dirt cheap.

Still can't believe i sold my Datsun Bluebird estate, because, it was boring, you know why?, because there was literally nothing to do to it as it was so utterly reliable.

How i've kicked myself over the years for not staying with Japanese once i'd discovered just how trouble free they were, and no excuses because i was a kerbside cowboy at the time and all the Japanese cars i worked on only ever needed basic maintenance, they just never went wrong...meanwhile i was on first name terms at the Ford parts desk.

My Uncle used to have a bluebird and also loved it. The car he had after that was a Maestro (circa 1986), did he love that?, hmm, not so much......!

Wasn't that the re-badged and de-engineered previous gen Mitsubishi Colt? I test drove one (didn't buy it - too expensive to insure as a new driver) back in 1998, a 1.6 GLXi, which was nice to look at and drove very well indeed. The 1.8 134bhp GTi was a cracker at the time, but rare and expensive to run.

Essentially the same car but with a little less polish. The Colt it was based on was an outstanding little car. We sold a few to driving schools who covered huge mileages in them before trading them in for another. Costly but worth it. We though the Protons would be handy to sell to punters who found the Colts too dear.

Not sure which Volvo you're thinking of, BBD, but my V60 has 4 cylinders (unfortunately) and no shoulder line (fortunately). I'd have liked a 5-cylinder engine, but they had stopped offering thise before I got mine.

I had a 2004 Nissan Almera 2.2 Diesel for over 11 years - never once failed to start and needed just a couple of items replaced in that time. I looked it up on the MOT check website and it's still going strong. It was pretty dull, but with 6 gears and a biggish diesel it was pretty good on the motorway. It wasn't helped by the fact that for about the last 6 years I had it there was a CD stuck in the player - it would play fine, but wouldn't come out.

Compared to the Fiat Tipo saloon with 95bhp I drove about seven weeks ago as a rental car, the Sentra I drove three weeks ago was excitement itself. Faster, better interior design and quality, quieter, more economical; just better in almost every way.

Yeah, was having a 'senior moment' Avant!. I was thinking of the 2000-2009 S60, and of course the estate version of that was called the V70 not V60.

Talking of Hire Cars...we are off to Albufera in Portugal soon..has anyone any expierience of cheap car hire We would require two small run abouts... however I dont want to be putting down crazy deposits or trying to claim back via a third party insurance for any potential mark/damage..the other option is we use Uber, Prob two return trips per day into town/beach and back...heads telling me Uber..but would be nice to have flexibility of a hire car...any thoughts?

Ever driven one? Dull to look at certainly, but not dull to drive. Even the 1.4 16v was fun to pilot especially compared to rivals of the time. Mk V Escort and Mk III Astra were horrid in comparison. Pre-Renault Nissan made some great cars even if they didn't alway look the part.

Anything by Seat, sub brand of a dull brand from a country with no real car making history?

Nissan Sentra - Most characterless car... - badbusdriver

That is not really fair and suggests that you are not aware of Seat's existence before being taken over by the VW group juggernaut.

Before this most of them were license built Fiat's, which were in turn pretty characterful cars. The MK1 Ibiza was a very characterful little car, both in its looks and zingy performance (system Porsche engines don't you know!)

Regarding Spain's car making history, firstly, that has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the cars have character, secondly, while Spain does not have a LONG history of making LOTS of cars, at least not before the 1950's, it does have a LONG history. With the company which went on to become Hispano-Suiza (La Cuadra) starting to make electric cars in 1898. Car production in Spain did not really start to take off until after the civil war when Hispano-Suiza along with Banco Urquijo (Bank) and a group of Spanish industrial companies formed S.I.A.T. in 1940 which would go on to become SEAT.

“The MK1 Ibiza was a very characterful little car, both in its looks and zingy performance (system Porsche engines don't you know!)”

Horrid things! First company car I had was a 92 Ibiza 1.7 diesel, second was a 1.2 CLX. Poorly made, terrible Fiat gearboxes (like stirring porridge) and petrol engines which (despite the Porsche engineering involvement) were utterly lacking in character. Bargain buckets and looked ok, certainly quicker than the equivalent Fiesta but a 205 or even a Nova were far nicer to drive.

But I agree that Seat don’t deserve to be tagged as dull and lacking character. From the first VW engineered Ibiza and Toledo GTi’s to the later Cupra and FR models there’s always been some spirit about the Seat range since VW took over. I sourced an Ibiza 1.2 TSi FR for a friend last year and it was a good wee drive, nippy, nimble and economical. He is delighted with it.

I test drove a later Ibiza with the PD diesel. Handling very understeery with so much weight in front but it picked up speed effortlessly with all that torque. Refinement was poor though with the rough engine making everything inside vibrate at idle - that engine was a much better match in bigger cars like Passat and Superb if you like a civilised ride.

Nissan Sentra - Most characterless car... - badbusdriver

I remember a work mate having a MK1 Ibiza 1.5 (GLX i think), and he raved about it!. I've never driven one myself, but i did like the looks, very crisp, clean and modern for the time, with the wheels pushed right out into the corners it had virtually no overhangs to speak of at either end.

I really didn't like Seat's re-style of the MK1 Fiat Panda (a car i absolutely love) which made it look horrible.

The MK1 Toledo, which was the 1st Seat developed after VW took the company over, was really a Skoda Octavia before it came about. Same idea really, put a hatchback body with a huge boot on a relatively small platform, which in the case of the Toledo was the MK2 Golf. The Octavia did the same thing 5 years later.

“I really didn't like Seat's re-style of the MK1 Fiat Panda (a car i absolutely love) which made it look horrible.”

The Seat version was essentially the first gen version while Fiat updated theirs in 86 with much cleaner styling, better trim, free revving FIRE engines and more modern suspension. These were great little cars, simplicity itself and great fun to drive. Crash worthiness of a wet paper bag but then what didn’t back then? Sold a fair number in my day and with nothing on them really it was rare to have an upset punter.

So maybe more rubbish than dull. Funny how one can take an interest in some manufacturers but others pass you by. I have a pretty good idea if most manufacturers model range but Seat pass me by, is that just because they "white label" and don't actually create anything original?

If you are saying Seat's are rubbish, you are also saying the same about Skoda, VW and Audi, as under the skin they are the same. If you are saying you don't like how they look, well that is a seperate thing, and entirely down to personal choice. But, again, that has nothing to do with whether or not a car has character. If the Seat range pass you by, then it is probably safe to assume you have never driven one. You can't say a car is characterless without having driven it (unless of course, your ONLY consideration is how the car looks), it has to be dull both to look at and drive. There have been so many cars over the years that have looked dull, but have unusual or interesting engines, or are particularly entertaining to drive, this gives them character.

Nissan Sentra - Most characterless car... - drd63

And that's just the point, I've never driven one but never had a desire to drive one. VW have made plenty of interesting cars, have innovated, produced some great engines etc etc, Seat just get given a template to produce a slightly cheaper version of the original from. That to me epitomises dull.

Yep, it was my Dad's and we shared it after I passed my test. It was the 1.6 SLX if I remember correctly.

Nissan Sentra - Most characterless car... - KB.

Blimey, I know I'm not that adventurous but reading the above I'm clearly worse than I thought ....

Among the thirty something cars owned since 1967 there were some pretty bland machines.... Morris Minor, couple of Austin 1100s, couple of Maestros, various Anglias, Singer Gazelle VIII (the boring 1967 square shape).... and so it goes on.

Not only that but there was a Maxi and a dreadful Chrysler Alpine and a Sunbeam Talbot ( no, not an interesting early one - an horrendous1979 two door).

If you want characterless just stick with me.

OK, admittedly we progressed on a tiny bit from there but not to any exclusive exotica. A 1600E, Corsair GT and a rather pleasant Rover were better than some. The Renault 16 had character if you call developing a rust crack that went virtually the width of the car, characterful.

Then we come to Hyundais and VWs ... pretty undramatic - dull even, but don't seem to keep breaking down - which at this stage is a bit of a bonus.
