No. 1 Renault fan? - badbusdriver

I was stopped at the side of a house today due to roadworks in the village i was working in and noticed the driveway was full of Renaults. There was an Alpine GTA, an Avantine, a Vel Satis, a Megane (S1) convertible, a 25, a Safrane and a late model Laguna parked on the road (daily driver?). Quite a collection, though unfortunately (imo) there wasn't a 16, hey ho!.

I should know better, I’ve seen the pain they can cause. I’ve sold them and I’ve owned them, I’ve had to fix them and they’ve emptied my wallet. I’ll rarely recommend one yet I hold a secret fondness for Renault too.

I loved the 25 and the Safrane, both armchairs on wheels and mechanically actually quite simple if you can live with the electrical gremlins.

The Mk I Laguna was an attempt to lift quality and it worked well with the early cars and the old 8v petrol engines and non-turbo 2.2 diesel. All were fit for big miles in comfort. Later 16v cars were prone to HGF and timing belts snapping early.

The Renault 19 16v was a joy. By far the best hot(ish) hatch of its time, at least until the Pug 306 arrived.

The Clio 16v also was a hoot. The renowned Williams was a bit to harsh for me.

The Espace was the granddaddy of the MPV, a well thought out thing. Just a shame they didn’t build it properly and the later diesel motors were so weak you were almost guaranteed a catastrophic failure at some point. They gave up selling it here as it was financial suicide to buy one latterly.

If I spotted a nice Safrane nearby with a buttons price tag I wouldn’t be able to say no.

Renault have had some great looking cars, but I've never been brave enough to own one.

They had/have some bizarre decisions to use plastic where metal would be better, and the way they situate components in the engine bay bumps up the repair price.

I'm not a Renault fan...or any French car for that matter.

Though I do think they often have some great styling ideas.

BUT...my wife had a top of the range 2 litre Megane Coupe Cabriolet...only 2 years old when she bought it with 10k miles on it. (she saw it, loved it, bought it)

She kept it for SEVEN years...and it didn't put a foot wrong in that time...not even a coil pack, which is virtually unheard of.

Oh..and it threw a coil spring once.

We did have to suffer the dreaded headlight bulb change a few times but apart from that it gave no trouble at all and never let her down.

Yet..I still won't buy a French car..?..I'll stick with Toyota.

Got stung by a Renault Modus, shoddily built, poor components, electrical and mechanical problems and that’s before you spend over an hour to replace a front light bulb.

My dad had a Renault 16 in 1970 when all the other "commercial travellers" were driving Fords, Vauxhalls and BMCs. He loved it, said it would easily clock 100 on the Lancashire side of the M62! I went to Sheffield with him to collect it when new and a couple of times we thought it had stalled at lights, since there was no noise or vibration from the engine. It was a revelation after the Corsair 1.7 V4 he had just traded in.

This led to my mum getting a Renault 6 in the mid 70's, and became the car I would rag around and use to attend interviews for university before buying my own Austin 1100.

I then had my own Renault 16 in the mid 80's, and while comfortable, it wasn't the car for a chap in his 20's! Traded it for a Signal Orange Mk3 Capri 2.0S.

The in the early naughties I test drove a Vel Satis 2.2dCi over a two day period and really liked it. Interior quality was excellent as were materials used (and I was in a company A6 at the time). I guess what stopped me ordering one was that the company car park was full of German saloons. I liked to be different but maybe not that different! I went for a Swedish saloon instead.

Like SLO, I have images of finding a lovingly kept Safrane or Citroen XM at silly money.

Our recent smart purchase went against my policy of avoiding anything Renault.

It was such a debacle I will in future trust my instincts!

So far, my 1999 Megane ranks as the most reliable car I've owned over significant mileage, 100K, needing just a sensor and a wheel bearing if i recall. Far more reliable than my Golf which I owned previously to about 80K and it didn't fill with water either. But I know of many poor examples in the subsequent decade amongst friends and colleagues. But always nice to drive and comfortable. My favourite Renault-- the 5 Gordini.

Flogged a few XM’s in the 90’s. Lovely big things to drive when the suspension was working as intended. A magic carpet. I took a rare 24v V6 manual in as a part ex against a Mondeo but sadly it was too far gone to sell on. But the 2.1 diesel was the pick for me.

I like French cars. I have had a Citroen GS auto- great little car but rusty, A Renault 30 V6 auto- great car, I loved the Rover SD1 but very prone to breakdown of all kinds,and a few years ago a Peugeot 407 2L diesel auto, another very good car.

SO would I buy another French car? Yes.

I have recently joined the SUV brigade and have a Honda CRV as I would never buy anything JLR. ( My son has a Defender and pays a lot for the privilige of driving about in a noisy, unreliable, uncomfortable relic, and my experience of R.Rover is not a good one.)

Can't comment seriously on Renaults. My daughter had a Mk.1 Clio which was OK, tho I always thought coolant changes should have been scheduled, so people overlooked them. SWMBO had a Mk.2 Clio top of the range, which was also OK except for the inevitable rattly sunroof.

As you all know, I have been a Pug fan since about 1990, mostly 205s, with several 306s and now a 207 for almost 10 years. There have never been more than three on the drive except when family was visiting. Sadly they have moved on to Golfs, Minis, Nissans and now a Jag - gross and grotesque vehicle that it is. No accounting for taste.

The first truly well built car my dad bought was a Renault 14 back in 1978. Compared the previous collection of Avenger, Cortina, Minx, Viva etc he had owned it was brilliant. Other than an oil change every 6 months and a service every year it never saw a garage. No rattles, no water leaks, lovely ride and seats, it was brilliant.

That was until it went for its first MOT, it failed on rusty brake pipes. Shorty after the exhaust snapped off, the radiator sprung a leak, the paint on the bonnet cracked to a broken ice pattern and huge water blisters formed on the sills. Time to get rid.

But nobody would offer a decent PX so despite the problems another Renault seemed to be the only solution, even they did not want it.

He got a brilliant deal on a Talbot Horizon which with the exception of one issue a few days after delivery was every bit as good as the Renault except it passed it first MOT with no issues and did not start to dissasemble itself shortly after. For the record that was a Fench built car and not a Coventry one.

He was never tempted to buy a Renault again.

Had a a 3.0 XM back in the day. Didn't give me much grief in the time I owned it either. XMs have really shot up in price in the last few years.

I genuinly like most Renaults. They are usually nice to drive and all the recent ones have been pleasing, easy to live with cars.

As cars they are great, but some of the build, reliability and detailed design has been - to put it diplomatically - not so good.

I've got no problem with a driveway full of Renaults if someone else is pciking up the costs of keeping them going!

I've known a few MK1 and MK2 Clio owners who have rarely had any issues other than the usual wear and tear.
