Spare a thought for the folk due to collect their shiny new 18 plate car today. I am on train and have just passed many dealers with snow covered cars, no doubt some of these will be new for delivery today. Having recently picked up a new car, if it were me I would refuse to drive beyond the forecourt.

The thought of all those idiots on the road driving too fast, too close together, etc, as if the conditions were normal would certainly put me off - not sure about up North, but in my part of East Anglia the weather looks like it'll be turning warmer (relatively speaking) by this coming Sunday/Monday - I'd ask the dealer to hang on to it until then to be able to drive home in safer conditions.

Imagine if your car were currently on its way to the dealership on a transporter lorry? Ouch.

A few years back I saw an accident on The A12 motorway in Switzerland with an a transporter with 8 Volvos on The Toboggan going down to Montreux sliding past us on its side...

M1 in about 2005. A transporter of Audis all nicely barbequed.

Wifes uncle bought a new Hillman in the 60's, transporter went under a low bridge and Hillman ended up as a convertible.

I'd never take delivery on the first day of a new registration. With a whole lot of status-conscious punters in there, one would be unlikely to get the best individual attention from the sales staff.

Fortunately mine is due to be built next week, so I should get it sometime in April, low bridges and shipwrecks permitting.

Used to be murder when it was only once a year on 1st August.

Though changing it to twice a year helped even out sales and make life easier for the industry it did have a negative effect on depreciation over the first few years with your shiny new car aged much more quickly by the twice a year age related plate change.

I’ve never understood it but I put it down to the superficial “look at me” attitudes that have become part of life in the UK. When you factor in that most of the ‘my new car’ drivers are either renting on PCP or piloting a company-owned or leased asset then it makes even less sense.

However, I did exploit the system a couple of times by taking advntage of the big discounts available just before the plates change. Three years and 60k miles later the plate on the back makes almost no difference to residual value, so why would I choose not to save my company thousands?

The only frisson of amusement that comes from the plate changeover is the few vaguely funny words up for grabs by the personalised plate brigade. I imagine DR18BLE has gone to a new parent, or perhaps an old school footballer. "16" and "66" had a bumper crop of opportunities for sn*****ing schoolboy humour (including "SN16GER" itself!) and I imagine quite a few letter/number combinations - those beginning "BU66..." for example - were banned.
(Well, it passes the time.....)
