Peugeot 206 clutch problems - SamL30612

My Peugeot 206 1.4 petrol (2005) had clutch trouble the other day. I was in slow moving traffic and the clutch pedal started to feel loose at the bottom as I pressed it down and the car stalled a few times. Also some cracking/clicking noises going on. Then I couldn't get the car in gear with the clutch pedal pressed all the way down. It was taken to a garage which I haven't used before (new to the area) and they had it for just short of 2 days. At first they said they had driven it around fine and couldn't find a fault with it! They asked what the roadside assistance mechanic thought was wrong with it and I told them that he thought it may be the clutch cable and the adjuster that goes with it.

So the garage changed the clutch cable and I picked it up this morning. The clutch still feels loose at the bottom and I can't seem to get the right clutch control in first and second gear now.

I don't feel confident to take my car back to the garage because they kept it for so long for what I now find out is a 1 hour job and also they were not very communicative or helpful.

I am thinking of taking it to a different garage and asking them to check it over for a second opinion. But my concern is that A) the car will break dwn again and B) the clutch control is now very erratic because of the inconsistent tension when pressing on the clutch pedal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No springs on these for clutch return,

Just the spring pressure of the clutch pressure plate.

And there's a known fault in the system,

i.e, the guide bush that the clutch release bearing rides on,

they wear and this gives basically your symptoms.

And to be honest I've seen some fairly horrific clutches in Peugeots,

Some of them actally have the release bearing cutting into the tangs springs of the pressure plate.

Anyway only way to find out is to remove the gearbox.

Thanks for your reply. What you're saying makes perfect sense.

An update for you..The car broke down again on Friday, less than 2 miles drive after picking it up from the garage!

Luckily this happened right outside a different garage. These new guys were great in getting my car out of the road and had a quick look, they mentioned a seized release arm and they want to have a proper look at the gearbox as you suggested.

They're a busy garage, which I guess is a good sign, and I may have to wait a day or two to find out the result. They warned me of the timeframe and possible cost though so I am in the loop and confident that it will get sorted properly this time!

Further update to follow!

Peugeot 206 clutch problems - SamL30612

Just got my car back from the garage and the result is...

New clutch kit, sleeve, clutch cable and clutch link rod have sorted the problem. With 3.5 hours labour it came in at around £450.

3.5 is pretty slick,
