Filling and carrying a 20ltr Nato jerry can - autumnboy

Can I today, call into a filling station and fill my steel nato 20ltr steel jerry can/cans. Then carry in my car to the marina for my boat outboard engine.

Asking as the marina price for fuel is now so stupid compared to supermarkets.

thanks

Not legally - there's a limit of 10 litres for steel containers and 2x 5 litres for plastic

Not legally where, the filling station or car.

Both, I believe.

You can fill and carry up to a maximum of 30 litres thus: 2 x 10ltr metal cans plus 2 x 5ltr plastic cans.

Same goes for storage at home.

All containers so used must have "Highly Flammable" on them.

Jerry-cans of 20ltr are illegal for the transport and storage of fuel.

Police have powers to stop transport of fuel in a car if they have reason to believe it is a "dangerous load" or may be "hazardous".

Really? This seems to say differently

You say this, yet a local Nationwide garden centre sells them....

How often do you use the boat ?

Leave the 20ltr Jerry's on the boat, buy 2x 5ltr plastics, fill them up when you fill your car, then go to the boat and transfer them to the 20ltr.

(Assuming you are not too far from the Marina.)

Is the boat's max capacity 20 ltrs ? (If more - buy another Jerry !)

Assuming you are talking about petrol ? If Diesel, no problem, fill yer boots.

IME diesel is cheaper at a marina, as you don't have to pay the duty levied for road vehicles.

The boats fuel tank is a fixture onboard and capacity of approx 200ltrs and is petrol.

Using 5ltr cans would be having 4 or 8 of them and a few trips.

if you are using portable outboard motor fuel tanks from any major motor manufacturer they are approved for the carriage and storage of fuel and should be marked as such.

And they are not illegal.

If you dig into the guidance linked from the above page the Petroleum Licensing Authority (one or another of the tiers of Local Government) can impose conditions.

All fuel stations I use regularly have signs restricting quantities that can be dispensed into containers along lines mentioned above. Pretty sure the signage refers to regulation/licensing.

The regulations actually seem to refer only to petrol, the guidance linked from Ethan's HSE page imples as much. Site operators are likely to adopt one regime for both fuels to avoid complication - how many users want/need more than 5/10 litres for use when losing at fuel light bingo?

At one time we had a diesel only truckstop locally which also had retail pumps for cars. IIRC they had a different regime for containers but as it closed 20 yrs ago the detail is lost.

And they are not illegal.

HSE needs to tell filling stations then - many of them still have the old limits posted.

Mmm... I've just found out about this law. I''ve been filling a metal 20L jerry can and putting it in my car to take to track days for years and never been challenged.

I've done the same years ago with my son's car, although the cans were put in the kitcar on its trailer.

It's nobody else's concern why I should want to buy 40 litres of unleaded and fill up the car at the same time. Let's say I have a very thirsty lawnmower and a big lawn to mow.

Or let's say it's none of their business.

One person's freedom is another person's risks. You might not be so happy if I move in next door and start storing my petrol in an old bathtub in the garden. Or set up a skunk farm there. Or a recycling centre. Lets just say I have a new hobby. Or let's say it's none of your business?

I gather that it is quite legal to store up to 15 Kg of black powder at home if you have the necessary permit.

In hard-rock mining they reckoned one pound of this would shift over 2 tons of rock.
