KIA Venga and a new puppy - A long drive, an old corsa and good manners - oldroverboy.
So. drove from Colchester over to Carno in mid wales to collect a bearded collie puppy.
Left at 4 am A12/A14/M6/M54 and then local roads, hoping to miss traffic and impressed with the A14/M1 junction.

Passed a very old corsa diesel on the M54 going a bare 40 mph...all the HGVs having to pull out and pass.

On the "elevated" section through the M6 roadworks barely slowed down either way, returning through the roadworks about 17.30. Realised i was in the wrong lane and when I indicated to move over, immediately let in.

Puppy not happy in the cage in the back without the luggage cover, so put her in the footwell where she got a bit of ayrcon in a high sided caedboard box and the lead fastened tp the seat release lever. One happy puppy, sat quietly dozing and occasionally looking at me.

And the Kia? 39.mpg a bit going at motorway speeds till shrewsbury and 38. a bit returning with more traffic, and the scenic route over the hills from Carno to welshpool.

The puppy? settling in and been called Blodwen... she is welsh after all.

Happy Hols everyone.

perhaps the Corsa did record 60mpg, impressive yes, sensible, NO - any driver who forces HGV's (or any other vehicle) with low speed restrictions to move to lane 2 is a danger to other road users - especially car drivers who end up bunching up queuing to get past, accident waiting to happen

I hope all goes well with the bearded lady, ORB! I can imagine what you might have called her if she'd come from Essex....

I'd have thought you'd have got better mpg than that from the Venga: if I'd done that journey in the 2.0 petrol Octavia I'd have got a bit over 40 mpg. Maybe the Venga is running at higher revs at motorway speeds than the Octavia which cruised at 2000 rpm at 70 mph.

Comfort RULES! It has just edged 40mpg on occasions, but I am very satisfied with the comfort of the car. Don't forget to put in the equation the following. Cost with service package at less than 1 year old £9000, very comfortable! insurance cheap, ved acceptable.. On balance one of my better choices. of cars in recent years, even though none of them have actually been bad. However, it seems that more walking will be done. Some people like blodwen, others vote for lulu.. (she has got reddish brown hair)

Short hatch shapes seem to have a fuel sting in the tail once you go over a certain speed, relatively upright hatch causing a vacuum?
The C2VTS HDi we owned for a couple of years would happily give near on 60mpg so long as you kept it below 70mph, once above that consumption dropped sharply with even 80mph dropping to 45mpg or less.

Longer sleeker cars whilst ultimately heavier seem to cleave through the air at higher speeds without the fuel penalty.

Good luck with the pup (you'll need it:-), as i type Ruby our working cocker is busy beside me in her whelping box cleaning and feeding 5 pups born to her 16 days ago, one of which will be staying permanently...Ruby's been a trooper, C section birth but within 3 hours of the op was home with us sorting her new one and only litter out, we lost the undersized one that caused the problem but in reality the 5 were so big the vet reckoned she would never have been able to give birth normally anyway.
5 all in a row at this very moment latched on filling their bellies with 5 wiggly tails in a row.
