The kids have all but left home. The trusty old Toyota Avensis verso has killed it's water pump and drive belt plus maybe a few other things. even if it gets fixed it's going as we don't need a seven seater junk carrier.

The wife has said now you can buy a car you want...but it has to have 4 doors.

What to go for......readies available to tune of around £7kish.

Audi...mmm....common as muck and dull and boring unless S series and bone jarring ride and potentially expensive upkeep.
BMW....nuff said.

Cars I like the look of....Honda Legend, Mazda 6 or 3 MPS, Lexus IS250, Lexus GS300, Mazda 6 high spec Zugara or similar with 2.3l engines.

I want something different...I have 3 other cars I can drive...Peugeot 207GTI, Corolla T Sport. They give me the fun factor. MPG not a major issue as only doing 5000 miles a year in it. Discounting diesels as well. Maybe need to be careful of road tax....£495 yikes!


So what would you suggest/recommend.

Whatever you are thinking...do it quick cos...I had those dreams and "authorisation" but when my ideas went "to panel" and i was cross examined on how we would fit any potential aditions to the family in, plus an ageing mother in law in the car (or how we would actually get her in) my dream turned once again into just that..... a dream. However Grand kids are the most wonderfull reason to have to buy another sensible car.

Mother-in-law lives in Surrey...we live in Aberdeen and she visits twice a year hence the need for 4 doors. Can't see grand children on the horizon for at least 5/6 years....

Want something that will put a smile on my face as well as being docile and tame when needed. A Q car in other words.

My own Q car, which also serves as the family bus, is a Saab 9-3 Aero 2.0T 6sp man. Leather, nav, great stereo, twin zone climate and tuned to 270hp/380Nm (would 30-110 in 10.3 put a grin on your face - it does mine), Maptun springs, Monroe Reflex shocks & a mix of std & HD bushes. Traction control, ESP, loads of airbags and strong as a tank (I know, I crashed it and rebuilt it).

Despite it's sports suspension, my MiL finds it very comfy. It's also very quiet.

If I could find one I'd have a Turbo X, or a V6 XWD, but these don't have the electronic rear limited slip (and the locking button on the dash that goes with it!!!). The Turbo X has to be the ultimate sleeper - with a tune yo've got a proper Ferrari Frightener.

And at that money you're right on for getting a really good one and enjoying the Saab experience before they become too rare and specialist.

Bloke near me has a mod'd Mazda 3 MPS - yeah, nice motor. Right on the pace.

Also near me an MG ZT-T V8 - oh, the glorious sound! And it makes my Saab look like it's stood still!!!

Don't get too excited - all 3 of mine left 18-20 years ago & we still have to "help out" from time to time.

Eldest left @ 23yrs, for a flat 2 miles away. Ate here for months and needed "help" regularly when bills rolled in - we paid upfront = he paid back by installments (most of the time).

Youngest, 21 yrs, off to London for work - needed £2k for flat deposit & setting up - repeat when buying Aberdeen house 4 years later.

Middle, 23 yrs, bought an Aberdeen flat but forgot lawyer's fees, "setting up home" costs, etc etc.

Nice to see them getting on but they forget what kick started their homes/flats etc etc.

If she is only there twice year buy what you want and if she won't fit in it rent a car for the short periods.
