Our Citroen C5 diesel (2008 estate) is stalling regularly when idling (or when slowing to a stop). It's been in to the garage 3 times, and we've had the AA once - we've spent almost £3,000 so far (!!!) and the fault is still there.

So far:

Garage 1, Visit 1: fitted 4 new fuel injectors and serviced the car.

Two days later, an engine warning light came on and the car started stalling again.

Garage 1, Visit 2: replaced the EGR valve and checked the engine fuel recycling system. There was also a fault on the air flow system which was repaired.

A few days later we were driving to an event in the East Midlands and the fault started again. We called the AA out and the mechanic suggested that it could be the fuel pressure valve. (No warning lights but the revs were fluctuating wildly when idling.)

Garage 2, Visit 3: removed and tested the high pressure fuel pump (it was ok). The car seemed to be driving ok again so they returned it to us.

The fault has, however, returned again. Generally it has been ok to drive as it's stalled when we've been slowing to a stop anyway - but in a couple of recent incidents, it has stalled as I've pulled onto a large fast-moving roundabout and onto a dual carriageway. I'm driving with a small child so it is worrying.

Any ideas, anyone?

I had a similar problem on an earlier one with the 8 valve engine and never did find out what it was as the head gasket went and I scrapped the car but likely culprits are, the fuel filter, pressure regulator on the HP pump or a leaky injector.

What usually causes stalling is lack of fuel which can either be cause by an air leak in the fuel system from the tank or low rail pressure which can be caused by the pressure regulator or possibly the pump although I think this is unlikely but a faulty injector is more likely.

Mine was intermittent so I tended to forget about it until I put my foot down to overtake and it would stop in the middle of the road - most embarrassing.
