Audi/VW - Transverse or North South, which is best ? - Steveieb

VW continue with the transverse format whilst Audi prefer N/S.

But are the benefits of equal length drive shafts overplayed ? And does North South make changing cambelts more complex. And alter the balance of the car?

Grateful your views?

Depends on the platform they're built on - MQB for small/medium models is transverse engined - MLB for medium/large models is longitudinally engined.

Audi A4/Q5 models upwards are MLB, with A3/Q2 downwards on MQB. Historically, Audi's with longitudinal engines used to be nose-heavy as the engine was so far forward but MLB allows it to fit further back.

VW are all (or will be) MQB except Touareg and Phaeton which will be MLB.

There is of course also a small NSF platform that's transverse.

Low perforamance cars FWD is considered best and transversal is the cheaper solution.

High performance cars rarely use the FWD layout because weight is transferred to the rear wheels under acceleration, while unloading the front wheels and sharply reducing their grip, effectively putting a cap on the amount of power which could realistically be utilized.

In addition, the high horsepower of high-performance cars can result in the sensation of torque steer. Electronic traction control can avoid wheel-spin but largely negates the benefit of extra power.

This was a reason for the adoption of the four-wheel-drive system in the high performance Audi Quattro cars.

Drive any n/s performance car and the balance is noticable and even better if the car has 50/50 weight distribution.

Thanks for the useful information.

Seems that the N/S FWD configuration is an ideal compromise between RW and FWD features. Would you agree? And do manufacturers only fit to premium models because of the cost?

I would say more of a halfway house. Improving the balance, but does not solve wheel spin, hence quattro being popular.
