The government has just spent £2,000,000 putting signs on the M5 in Devon giving the fuel prices at some of the services. Am I alone in thinking this is just a waste of money, I always avoid buying fuel on the motorway as it is invariably about 10p per litre dearer.

And if this forces the Service Station garages to cut their prices, as they now know people can see how expensive they are ... how exactly will that be a bad thing ?

Let's see if they do - don't hold your breath.

The operators don't believe in anything approaching customer service (apart of course from the excellent family-owned Westmorland services on the M6).

They also own Gloucester services on the M5 - the small skincare company that my wife is part-owner of is a stockist to them.

We stopped off in Gloucester services for a nosey at how the products were displayed, for SWMBO to meet with the site manager, and a bite to eat while heading down to Devon a few weeks ago. Expensive, but the food was of high quality, the staff friendly and chatty, and the stone/grass roof buildings do look rather stunning.

So we stopped at the Northbound one on the way back too !

MSAs are obliged by their licence to provide 2 hours free parking and free toilets - but since those are all that many travellers need, they have to cover the costs of providing them by overcharging those customers who actually buy anything.

I agree RT, they have to make the money somehow. We have the option to vote with our feet if we don't like their prices.

I've never filled my car up on a motorway but, one company I worked for had fuel cards for their trucks and I used to use Newport Pagnell every night to fill up on the way back. They used to give us free coffee aswell.

Does anyone actually NOT know that motorway service area prices are high?
