A friend of mine told me that she recently rented a VW Caddy automatic. She had to pass through some narrow gates so she stopped the car, put it in neutral and pull the handbrake on and got out of the car to fold back the wing mirrors to pass through the gateway. As she was getting back into the car, with her right foot still on the ground, the car pulled away and went through the gateway trapping her ankle between the door and the cill, badly cutting and scraping it. The hire company is charging £350 for repairs to the door but she is adamant that the vehicle malfunctioned in some way. One thing is for certain, she could not have had a foot on the accelerator is that was outside the car at the time of the incident.

She is an experienced driver and rents cars frequently although she doesn't own one as she now lives in London but has done in the past. She is a levelheaded woman, not given to panics or other maladies and I have to say I do believe her description of the event.

The rental company say they checked the car over and confide nothing wrong so she's resigned to paying for the damage but I'm wondering if you can offer any explanation for the event if it really did happen as she says it did?

Before I close but I'd say thank you for an entertaining and informative column. I found it very useful on many occasions especially when dealing with the problems occurring on older cars, which I find far more interesting than those letters asking advice on which new one to buy, usually with a budget that is 10 times more than I've ever spent on a car in my life!

Thought she'd put it in neutral but actually it was in gear, caught the throttle momentarily with her left foot as she got in, car moved?

I can't remember what the DSG (pretty sure Caddy has that) gear shift looks like, but its easily done in other autos unless you push the lever right the way forward past reverse to the P section, strange car easily done just flicking it forward one notch to N if you happened to be in say 3/4 depending on design moving the stick forward one notch wouldn't be N it would be D, i'm presuming but can't remember if that horrid box has P anyway.

I can't imagine a DSG having enough creep on tickover to overpower a normal parking brake, but if say the revs increased slightly as aircon engaged as it does then it's possible that the car could move off on its own..its a definate possibility with a normal TC auto left in D.

Handbrake not applied hard would make this more likely.

just a thought, is the parking brake electric on these vans/mpvs too, if so it would release automatically upon drive being taken up.

Sorry about the injury.

If a DSG is in neutral it's the same as a manual in neutral, the gears are de-selected and the clutch isolates drive however the car is free to roll. Is the location where she was hurt level ground? Perhaps the handbrake was ineffective?

If the DSG is left in D and the (real) handbrake engaged the engine will crank up and creep is ultimately possible but this times out after 10 seconds.

If Park had been used the car couldn't have moved.

There is a little sign on the dashboard it shows a foot on the footbrake prior to applying the hand break the reason for this was hundreds of accidents with French cars that were fitted with the disc brakes on a handbrake ,after a trip the brakes get hot if the footbrake is not applied the disc cools and contracts letting the vehicle roll if the gear shift was knocked the hand brake would not hold it !
