Is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class prone to engine failures?
A couple of days ago I came within an inch of ordering a 2010 Mercedes-Benz E220cdi Blue Efficiency, when I read on the internet that large numbers of recent buyers of this car in UK and elsewhere had suffered total engine failures due to injector design problems. These cars have come to a grinding halt on the road. Are these reports true? Today I rang up an old friend in a car dealership who said that this engine is known to be of inherently faulty design amongst the staff at his local Mercedes-Benz dealership, but officially Mercedes-Benz are denying any problem exists with that engine. If so, how can they sell cars with duff engines whilst knowing they are duff? That would be an absolute scandal.

Not "total engine failure". It's just that the extremely fine tolerances of the Malaysian-manufactured Piezo injectors sometimes are not quite fine enough. Mercedes-Benz does not seem to be able to get consistently high quality control for the component which explains the patchy manifestation of the fault.
