What could our granddaughter buy as her first car for £2000?

Please advise what would be a suitable first car for my 18-year-old granddaughter who has passed her test? She wants to spend only about £2000. For that sort of money, what could be a fairly reliable and economical choice? We know nothing about the different makes, but we will get an expert to run an eye over it when we know what vehicle to look for.

The best car for £2000 to meet these criteria is a late Mk I Toyota Yaris 1.0-litre.

My son has just passed his driving test, could you recommend a few small cars to insure? He has a budget of around £1000 for the car and I'm expecting the car insurance to be high.
