Why can't older drivers hire cars?

Have you or your readers come across instances of motoring age discrimination? I telephoned a local vehicle rental company recently to ask about van hire. When I told them my age (I’m 80) was told no hiring for over 80s. I attempted to join Green Flag Recovery but was denied because of age. My wife tried to join and got as far as ‘name other driver’ when it failed again for the same reason.

The problem is insurance, same as if you were 18. If you could get insurance you could hire the van. Again, Green Flag is essentially an insurance based on risk and the risk with an octogenarian is significantly greater.
