Where can over-75s hire a car in the UK?

I have been told recently that it is illegal in the UK to hire cars to people over 75. Can this be true? I am 75, my wife 73. We both have cars and clean licences, and drive daily. We live in Aberdeen and find long journeys too tiring, so to go to Birmingham for example we would prefer to fly or take the train, and then pick up a car for local visits. Can you advise which car hire companies operate with no age limits please?

It's not illegal, but many hire companies impose an upper (and lower) age limit on who can hire a car, at the request of their insurers. Hertz car hire, when booked through Saga, makes no mention of an upper age limit and you should also be able to hire a car through Avis.
