Is it safe to have my tyre pressures slightly below the recommended figures?

I have a 2018 Focus ST with 19-inch wheels. I always set the pressures to the plate on the door frame - 41PSI front and 38 rear. I only ever carry no more than 3 people.

Several times I've had new tyres fitted from a big name fitter - always the same make - and on checking after fitting notice they are down to around 36 front and 35 rear approx. The same when I have a main dealer service. I admit the ride is a lot softer and more comfortable but are lower pressures okay? Do they affect tyre wear, braking distance and will they tend to rip the tyres off?

I always pump them back up - do i need to? After querying this with the tyre fitters they said that they have a chart of pressures they use.

As a general rule we would suggest using the recommended tyre pressures that are attached to the vehicle, as these usually take into account the exact specification of the vehicle. They also normally provide a range of pressures to account for vehicle speed and load, so as long as you are within these limits you should have no issues. Although tyre fitters and dealers will have their own source of information it may be more generic and less frequently updated, so it is harder to determine its accuracy.

As long as the tyres are within the recommended pressures for load and speed you should not experience excessive wear or altered braking distances. An underinflated or overinflated tyre will affect these factors, which is why correct pressures are essential.
