I wonder if you would suggest a nearly new replacement car for me. I am retired, pushing 70 and want an estate that has all the modern extras and is comfortable with 2 sets of golf clubs. Leather seats would help with our back problems. A local dealer has offered me a SAAB sport but I think there must be better out there. I see you regularly recommend Fords as excellent value and a friend of mine has a Skoda Superb, which looks good. However I have no favourites and suggestions you make based on your knowledge of the reliability and cost of running the cars would be much appreciated.

A Mondeo estate is excellent, slightly let down by its engine choice. Though Ford has announced a 139g/km 2.0 diesel, on sale now, and a new range of super economical ‘Ecoboost’ petrol engines coming next Spring. Currently the 2.2 diesel is the best; the1.8 diesel by far the worst. It’s also worth looking at the new SEAT Exeo ST, which is the wagon of the Audi A4 B7 based Exeo. Go for the 2.0TDI 143 engine, which is VAG's latest common rail piezo injected engine. Test of the saloon at www.honestjohn.co.uk
