I am a horse vet. I do between 25k and 30k miles a year. I need a car that is reliable, economical and has a large boot space. 4 wheel drive is an advantage as I need to travel in all weather conditions and drive across the occasional field. I would like a Discovery 3 but can't justify the cost as a work car. Also the high taxes are a killer. It's turning out to be quite a conundrum. I've had Subaru foresters in the past but running costs are high and I'd rather an auto due to the traffic in the South East.

We managed to get over 40mpg from a Nissan Qashqai diesel auto. Surprisingly, the new Toyota RAV-4 2.0 Petrol Valvematic Multidrive (CVT) is more economical and lower CO2 than the RAV-4 diesel auto. And there will be a British built Honda CR-V diesel automatic from January. But 4wd and auto is always going to raise the CO2. The lowest CO2 4wd is the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D4D at under 130g/km, but manual only.
