I bought a new VW Golf plus 1.9SE TDI and was persuaded to have the car with a DSG automatic gearbox after reading the Golf brochure that stated "the DSG gearbox offers a genuine alternative to a manual gearbox because it is able to change faster than a manual gearbox and more smoothly than a conventional automatic." Having driven a CVT automatic that was as smooth as silk, the DSG in my experience is like someone learning to drive. At low speed it is jerky on pickup and clunky when slowing down. VW has told me I cannot compare a CVT with a DSG automatic. This is very true. The DSG is the poor relation. It appears to me that the DSG gearbox may be struggling to handle the extra torque created by the diesel engine.

That's why the DSG needs a dual mass flywheel and some complex ECU programming to restrict torque in the first two gears. Can take a bit of getting used to.
