A family friend has recently replaced a much-loved last generation Toyota Corolla automatic with a new Yaris MMT. She is extremely disappointed with her new car due to the driving traits previously mentioned in your column (which she cannot adapt to) and intends to find a replacement vehicle with a conventional automatic transmission. She is wondering what the best automatic supermini alternatives are or whether to revert to a Corolla sized vehicle, can you help with some suggestions? The ability to confidently and smoothly accelerate is more important than ‘tweaked’ emissions for a low road fund duty, also she was previously delighted with the premium quality feel of her Corolla which felt almost Teutonic.

A Suzuki Swift 1.5 auto is probably best in class. We have had more than 130,000 reliable kilometres from a Toyota with the same powertrain in Thailand. Also a Hyundai i20 1.4 auto (but hard to get). Ford Fiesta 1.4 auto (but expensive before the bargaining starts). Toyota does do an IQ with a very smooth CVT automatic transmission, though she might think that too small.
